Hope it has helped good luck Scoobz.

This is simply NOT true. Before 6 months, you do not have to prove that it is a build fault. Also before 6 months you can get a full refund. After 6 months you can easily get redress. They are generally allowed one repair (either before or after the 6 months), and after that if anything goes wrong (not just the same fault) you can reject it. The Consumer Rights Act states that the goods must be durability. Elddis claim their vans are good for 27,000+ miles, so you have a key benchmark for rejection.

Freeatlast,

Take a look at the Elddis website. They claim their vans are rigorously tested to over 100,000 miles.
The fact is that if they are building vans with panels that crack and allow water in they are not fit for purpose. A caravan should last for at least six years without developing a major fault. Elddis claim they do.

I have, that's what I was quoting from. Its 27,000 miles not 100,000.

Setting a New Benchmark in Caravan Testing

The bonded Avante completed 90 circuits of this proving ground to achieve a ‘pass’ but again, Elddis wanted more. This durability standard was created as a benchmark for the non-bonded, screw fixed structure that is still the predominant method of construction in the industry. Elddis already knew that SoLiD Construction is stronger than this and therefore needed to create its very own measure of performance.

The fully loaded caravan travelled 27,000 miles on the Lommel track alone and the only casualty was the towing vehicle. Indeed, in order to complete the test, the tow vehicle had to be water-cooled after every three laps! The SoLiD Construction Avante 646, however, remained as good as new and, today, is owned by one of the team involved in the project and shows no sign of its punishing ordeal.

sorry, I was working from memory. 27,000 is a lot of miles fora caravan. we went away 16 times last year and only clocked up 3,000 miles. They imply of course that their Avante would have done a lot more and still been as good as new. Anyone complaining to a dealer about failed panels should definitely waive the Elddis website claims at them.

The above quote from the Elddis website seems to be total nonsense especially regarding the towing vehicle. Were they using a VW Beetle as how do you water cooled a normal engine?

It was a Range Rover, and it was the suspension they had to cool if you watch the video.

The Consumer Rights Act is very clear and in the explanatory notes there is this paragraph:

Goods to be of satisfactory quality

62.Subsection (2) provides that the test of whether or not the quality of the goods is satisfactory is determined by what a reasonable person would consider satisfactory for the goods in question, taking into consideration all relevant circumstances including any description, the price and any public statements by the trader or producer or their representatives, such as statements made in advertisements or on the labels of goods. For example, a lower standard might be expected of cheap or disposable goods in comparison to an equivalent item that cost more or was advertised as being particularly durable.

I sometimes wonder if things have deteriorated over the years, as My Elddis caravan is 26 years old and doesn't seem to have anything like the problems I hear about with very much newer caravans. Looking at my caravan when I bought it however, I doubt it has ever done 27,000 miles. From the condition of it when we looked it over it seemed like it had been wrapped up in cotton wool for the previous 24 years. The cooker looked brand new, and the grill pan still had the label on it. The seat cushions didn't look like they had been slept on, or even sat on.

Colin

Given that the Buccaneer range is advertised as being the most luxurious of UK caravans it seems reasonable to suppose that they are well made and that they will last.
We have a 2013 Schooner. Minor cracks at the front have
been repaired and the repair has lasted. We love the caravan and we have ordered a 2019 Commodore. If it goes wrong and it isn't repaired properly I will use the full force of the CRA.
BTW our first caravan was a Hobby and we had to have a large crack repaired.

I don't think there is much to choose between them to be honest. There are good ones and bad ones of every make and model, I would imagine from what I am hearing. I certainly don't get the impression that new caravans are necessarily any better than old ones. Indeed, the reverse may even be true. I would rather have my "oldie" than some of the newer ones I keep hearing about.

We expect more from our vans these days don't we? Aircon, auto-levelling, two TV's, large fridges etc are heavy, so the manufacturers have to save weight elsewhere. Elddis's SOLID construction is designed to save weight in the same way that modern monocoque cars are lighter than the old ones that had a chassis. The problem is that UK caravan manufacturers don't seem to want to stand behind their products and put them right even when they go wrong out of warranty. In fairness car manufacturers are the same. I had a BMW built MINI and the timing chain stretched at 60,000 miles. Timing chains are generally good for the life of the car, but would BMW do anything about it? No they would not. Good consumer legislation is the answer. In the USA they repair timing chains under warranty up to 100,000 miles. The CRA protects us, but we have to be brave and tackle the manufacturers.
It works. Last year my 2 year old washing machine blew up. I phoned Curry's and asked them to come out and fix it. They said I would have to pay, so I told them that a washing machine should last longer than 2 years and that I would claim for the cost of repair under the CRA. They repaired it free of charge.

In all fairness in my case, I know that Elddis had basically said the caravan was unfit for purpose. The problems I had in rejecting it were entirely down to the dealer who put their profits over satisfied customers, and used every low down trick in the book to avoid meeting their statutory obligations.

Very true, freeatlast. It is often the dealers who are the problem. I quite agree though, we should stand up for our rights.

I think the problem is that the vast majority of customers have no idea what their rights are when things go wrong. They think that they have to pay the day after the manufacturers warranty runs out, they don't realise that their redress is with the seller not the manufacturer and they don't realise how easy and inexpensive it is to make a claim in the small claims court. If we all sue the seller when things go wrong they will soon start putting pressure on manufacturers to improve build quality. The means of redress is at hand, we just need to use it.

I don't want any of that fancy stuff - well I do want a fridge but everything else sounds like extra bits and pieces that could go wrong! We've ended up with the xplore because it was the shortest caravan with a separate shower. I wanted a shower for when our teenage girls camp with us, they're not keen on campsite showers especially in france where facilities tend to be unisex and my OH is trepadacious of towing so wanted something short. Initially I was looking at 2nd hand foreign caravans but the shorter ones all had small or no bathrooms.

Hearing all this is rather scarey for a first time caravan owner who really has no clue what they are doing.

From what Ive read it strikes me that all caravans can have problems, that some people can get fab service from some dealers while others can have a dreadful time at the same place. It all feels a bit like a lottery.

I'll get legal cover with my insurance, have paid the deposit by credit card, will check everything twice, will abide by the terms of the warranty and keep my fingers crossed.

The dealership is approved by c&cc youd think they should do something if things go pear-shaped ??

Catterick Caravans are also approved by the C&CC. What a farce! Read the C&CC blurb:

Each Club Preferred Dealer has a strong reputation, and we're confident our members will get the highest quality of customer service at each site.

If my experience is anything to go by, heaven only knows what sort of service everyone else gets!
