This does not cause black stuff, plus you only need to carry the one bottle.

I have found that elsan double pink does not leave black bits unlike a number of other brands I have tried.
I totally agree as I changed to Elsan Pink from the Thetford brand after someone elses advice on a rally field a few years ago so we are not the only ones to find this. There probably are many other folk too that know this that are not members of this forum.
Never have black bits with Elsan. I did with thetford.

In all the years we have used Pink (& blue) for our camper loos, we have never had any black bits? Just using water would lead to ‘a not so fresh smelling loo’ I would say.
When I had a caravan and used a porta loo I used Fenwicks Top and Tail. It was the same fluid top and bottom and the fluid in the top helped to lubricate the pump and clean the bowl. It also tops up the fluid in the bottom bowl which will lose it's strength as you 'water' it down.
I never had any black bits but I am wondering if the black bits could be a black rubber washer starting to perish...just a thought.

The black bits are remaining particles of fluid which turns to bacteria after the flush tank has been standing empty for long periods such as draining down for winter which makes me believe that it's a chemical that is present in some brands and not others. However, I think that the cold temperatures contribute to the growth of bacteria because strangely enough, people who keep their caravans in a locked building or barn don't seem to suffer with the black bits whatever brand of Pink fluid they use. Interesting to find out though if those who do not suffer with black bits from the toilet flush tank actually do keep their unit in a building over the winter period.
Ours is outside, we use Ropers own make, blue and pink. Haven't seen any black bits. I hate the smell of the pink stuff and tend to really dilute it.I was interested using bio washing tablets instead of the blue. There's been lots of chat on here about them, but I don't mind the smell of the blue it's just the pink.

I tried that top and tail and swiftly went back to Elsan. Hated the smell and threw it away.
After trying other brands I went back to Elson and I don't think there's anything better, there cheaper but not better and there's no black bits with their pink.
I left the top n tail I bought at the elson point (on purpose)and those who use bio capsules or the sog system can't have any sense of smell

I've been trying a mix of laundry liquid and detol. No black bits at all and a nice smell.
I put a small amount of laundry liquid and a smaller amount of detol into a 5 litre container, fill it with water and use that to top up the flush tank.
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.
We use Thetford Pink in the top tank. Before winter, we thoroughly flush out the top tank with clean water, yet the following year we start getting the black bits. I have concluded that this is water residue that has produced bacteria in the tank during the standing period.
I have considered flushing the tank with a weak solution of Jeyes Fluid, on the basis that any residue will prevent bacteria because of its Jeyes Fluid content.
Bertie.
I put the Detol in because I thought a small amount would make a pleasant smell in the room. I was pleasantly surprised that it also seems to have eliminated the black bits. I know that Detol is good for many things and can remember a painter and decorator using it to get rid of the black mould on walls when I worked for a local council housing department in 1966. I hope it does the same in my toilet.
I don't drain the top tank in the winter as we go away every month for at least a week and I've fitted a small convector heater with a thermostat in the shower room, I put the thermostat onto frost setting so it keeps the place just above freezing and costs very little to run.

Personally I think that's the only thing the black bits can be. I cant imagine that the fluid that people add to the flush tank is somehow congealing and turning black.
Bacteria forming in whatever water is left in the tank at the end of the season is far more likely.
Like you say, it may be an idea to flush the tank through with some strong antibacterial solution and then allow it to drain thoroughly.
i have never had a problem with 'black bits' but i have only used Elsan 'Double pink' and 'Double blue' and fathfully follow their instructions.
i am impressed with how the whole system works and disolves my wife and kids poops without them getting stuck in the neck of the toilet cassette.
i dont understand how people spend over 10k on a caravan then try to save a few £ using other products not intended for chemical toilets.
i was at a campsite in france last summer and an old Irish chap was proudly showing me his new camper van conversion. he actually asked me to take a look at his chemical toilet because he thought the flush wasnt strong enough.
it looked a bit weak compared to the thetford in my caravan but he was using water in the flush tank and nothing in the cassette......it absolutely reaked!
brand new campervan smelling like a sewer...nice.
i told him he needed some chemicals and he said he was going to get some.
