The satisfaction of ageing vans is the clue. Our son's van, a Swift Charisma, is about 14 years old, faultless and very well made. By contrast, our van is a 2012 Swift Challenger and went back at 18months old for water ingress. Since then I have had to carry out corrections to several faults, and the work is ongoing as more problems arise from time to time.
The furniture in the Charisma is noticeably of better quality, both in build and finish, than the Challenger.
Bertie.

i have to say that the only area of camping and caravanning that doesnt get worse reviews as the units get newer seems to be folding campers. maybe if everyone switched to them for a few years the caravan industry would get a wake up call.

There is a separate catagory called folding campers, I moved from one to my current caravan 9 years ago.

Judging from the amount of dissatisfaction that is around, I reckon all the manufacturers would disappear under a sea of caravans. Would it work?

Some years ago, when we still had a motorcar industry, there was an item in the press about a man who was unhappy with a new Humber Hawk he had bought. Not being able to get it exchanged, he fitted a roof rack and attached a sandwich board with a list of all the faults affecting the car, and then parked it every day outside the Rootes main offices. In the end they relented and he got his exchange.
Bertie.

nope.

because people buy the same caravans from the same manufacturers and have the same problems,

then,

and how weird is this.

go back again a few years later, do the same thing and act all surprised when it happens again.

and the cccmotorhometents and stuff clubs keep schtumm just in case the crap caravan co ltd inc. stops putting adverts in their magazine and then they get laid off, coz theres no money and they have to go back to being, shock horror, normal campers/caravanners.

because then, they would come on here, with all the other people who go back and buy the same shoddy caravans year after year from the same shoddy manufacturers, complaining that they bought a shoddy van and one day, they all finally realise that THEY are part of the problem.

because whilst they are buying shoddy vans, they will keep making them.

dont buy substandard stuff, that you know is substandard in the hope that you may be lucky and get one that is slightly less substandard than the others.

sound familiar?

boycott them.

Although I agree with most of these posts, the problem is not actually quite as bad as it seems when you take the total number of caravans produced each year, and subtract those with faults I would think its minimal.
Bailey caravans get bad press about workmanship and build quality, some of you here have said its luck you either get a good one or a bad one, well I have had 2 Baileys and I have never had a problem, I have also had quite a few others without issue surely I cant be that lucky.

Why do caravans leak so easily , most second hand ones have damp issues ?

The only technical reason is that the construction of most caravans is pretty bad, but we all want our mod cons and want as small a car as possible to two them with.

When vans are built they have to keep weight down, which means light materials that bend and flex when being towed. Its this bend and flex that eventually opens up joints to the rain.

my van is now three years old and touch wood I've had no leaks, but I know sooner or later it'll happen.

Maybe "buy an old one" is not such bad advice. You certainly have far less to lose if it does turn bad. Ours is 26 years old and we haven't found any leaks yet. We bought it last year after selling an even older one at a profit. Buying a new or nearly new van doesn't seem to be the answer, as I've heard of people spending many £thousands on a shiny new van and having more problems with it than we did with our last £500 one.

My theory is that if it's lasted many years without problems, it must be a good one!
