Duffs, how was your first overnighter with your new outfit? We are off to Oxfordshire for 3 nights next week...
Something we could never have done with our old tent 😊

On collecting the van a week late due to OH being poorly which went on for 3 weeks, we didn't manage to stay in it.

Really disappointing, its all drained now and been put to bed, we have visited it twice last week checking we'd done everything, but need to go back and remove the toilet cassette It's never ending

I was looking forward to staying in it, but will visit every couple of weeks to make sure it is ok.

I presume you have had your trip now, how did it go, did you remember everything ? It is exciting, even tho it's not a tent

It would be better to use it for a few nights to check that all is ok and everything is working properly. Any faults could then be remedied before you want to use it next season.

why do you need to remove the toilet cassette? we have had caravans now for over 25 years and not once have we ever removed the cassette over winter, yes make sure the flush is empty but that is all we do with the loo

I would love to, but it's all been drained etc.Took loo out on neighbours advice, it's only in the caravan.

When we viewed the van it was all set up, hot water, heating etc all on, we checked the cooker and the fridge was on as well, he ran everything for us, then when we collected he went through it all again, so although I'd be happier staying it OH is happy to leave it for now.

But we have also been told to release the handbrake, which for some reason we can't do, going back this weekend to try again.

getting the water back in a caravan takes only a few mins, and draining it down again is the same amount of time, its something we do EVERY single time we use the caravan, we never move it with fluids in it regardless of the time of year, I would still be using your caravan if I was you, so that you know that it is fully working and that there aren't any hidden problems

Do you mean remove the toilet cassette or leave the hand brake off?

The only month my caravan isn't used is December.

Once the cold weather starts and the night time temperature falls below freezing, I hook it up and set the Alde heating at 6 degrees, and there it remains until the better weather returns.

Your van is obviously in storage, so I can see the logic, but I'd still suggest that a quick weekend is spent away, just to check everything for yourself.

As for removing the cassette toilet? Why?

And as for removing all fluids every trip???!!!

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure!

yes remove fluids every time the caravan gets moved, our caravan holds 60 litres in the tank plus 10 in the hot water heater and then the pipework so that amounts to 90 ltrs of water = 90kgs of weight! then add to that if the temps drop to freezing and the pipes ice up the mess is not worth the hassle, been there and done that after we had van serviced and they failed to drain back down! and then had to pay out for a new tap which wasn't cheap at the time. we also make sure their is no flush left in the loo, last thing you need is for the pump to be broken and only find out after you have used the loo!

Hi Duffs, unfortunately we didn't get away because I became quite ill. Then daughter had a few post natal problems which meant being readmitted to hospital.
However, plans to go somewhere when we can.

Thanks to everyone else for advice being given to Duffs. I am happily also lapping up all the advice. (Everything drained but toilet cassette not removed). The idea of putting the heating on very low really appeals 😊.
We are lucky, we have our caravan on our drive.

Keep in touch, Duffs. Would love to hear more of your adventures 😊
