We go off in the winter too. Just be sensible, watch the weather forecast then decide. We went to Delamere the first week last December and woke up to about 5" of snow, it was magical although we had to go to the train station in walking boots to get us into Chester for xmas shopping where there was no snow, we felt like a pair of idiots walking around the shops with big boots on but back on site and it was wintery icy conditions. We had no problems with the roads.

We go all year to be honest and love it.
I did not pay all that money for a van to sit on my front to look good.
It gets used, in all weathers all year round.
We love it, never had a problem, been snowed in a few times up Derbyshire over the years.

I was out when the beast from the east hit and was ok, so if you have all the correct kit, and are prepaired for winter then you should not have a problem.

Funny me and my service engineer Rob was talking about the 1st time he went in winter, up Derbyshire. Heavy snow in night drifted up side of van he had to climb out the window in morning to clear a path to open the door!!

The first time we went away in winter was to Greenhills at Bakewell, had about a foot of snow. Only had a Mondeo at the time so had to be towed off the site, through the owner's garden to the A6. There was no snow once we got to Chesterfield. Funnily enough, that didn't put us off.

Of course, it depends on age, anyhow. We are in our 80's, fairly active, but even so taking risks in icy conditions could easily result in broken bones and long recovery time. Unless, once on site, we stayed in the caravan if the ground was icy. And who wants that for a "holiday"?
Bertie.

best plan would be to head to spain for the winter?

i have a motorbiking friend who lives in a touring caravan when working in kent and lives on a boat in chester when not.

he told me of the misery of living in a caravan during the beast from the east. he some how plumbed his aqua roll inside the caravan but he said that during the evenings, even with the heating on full bore he couldnt rest his feet on the floor because the floor was too cold. he said he had to put his feet up. i think he has a lunar caravan.

our caravan takes a long time to get warm at easter.

i wouldnt mind a winter break though. my neighbors wil be away in thir caravan next week for half term but i guess its not ususally really cold until january.

interesting to see some one stayed in malvern over christmas....i live really close to malvern.

i pass a camp site by the swan pub at newland and recently its always very busy at weekends.

After years of tenting we bought our first caravan 4 years ago so we could get away outside the summer months. We have managed to use it every month of year since we bought it. Bracelands in the Forest of Dean in January, the Chilterns in February, Suffolk and Norfolk Easter all this year. Even had New Year at Chapel en le Frith in Derbyshire. Like others have said go prepared and keep your eyes on the forecast and perhaps go South not North. Can't say we ever have cold in the caravan using the blown air heating, never had to resort to using the gas for heating as well.

We are fortunate enough to have a caravan both with an insulated on board tank and underfloor heating.   The one advantage of the old Truma ultra heat system was that you could sit on fire while it warms up the van. Alde heating is much more even so can feel slower in the first hour or so but much imho nicer once it has warmed up as long as you have a decent installation. It is worth depending on the weather worth considering using a porch awning as it gives an “airlock” where you get out of your outside clothes and wellies without loosing all the heat out of the van and if If is going to be really cold a bucket rather than a wastemaster for grey water.

When the weather's cold and miserable we prefer to stay indoors as much as possible and only go out when we absolutely have to. Ice, snow, rain, gales, why on earth would we want to go out if we don't have to? Yes a caravan can be snug and warm inside, but what about outside? The inside of a caravan is a tiny space to be cooped up in when compared to a house, and we have all our "stuff" at home. Books, hobbies, cable tv, dvds, and of course central heating. Then there's the cost. We are not particularly well off as pensioners, so we prefer to spend our "holiday money" at a time when we have a more than reasonable chance of enjoying ourselves.

If anyone enjoys going caravanning in inclement weather, fine, go and enjoy it, but for us it would be an ordeal which we would not enjoy, so we simply don't do it. Our caravan is paid for, and costs us nothing when we are not using it, so we only use it when we would enjoy it. Each to their own I feel.

We are in Colin's court, and well and truly pensioners, so our caravan winters at home.
Not well off as pensioners??? According to the news media, the government considers pensioners to have elevated into the "comfy" zone.
The BBC is working to take away the free TV licence for over-75s - buts that's another story!

Ha ha, Plenty of B...S... in the media Bertie. Those that have a good company or personal pension, and own their own homes may be fine, but if your company pension is miniscule, like mine, don't own your home, and most of your income comes from state pension, then things aren't so great. This country's state pension is one of the worst in the developed world.

We are snug and warm at home though I must admit, it's just that we can only afford to go away when we would enjoy it most, and that means April to the end of September. We don't tend to go away in August either, as I volunteer on a Heritage Railway and that is our most busy time.

What gets up my nose, Colin, is that on the one hand the government trot out spiel about how the elderly and vulnerable must be looked after then, when pressures on the NHS are in the news, it is blamed on the increasing demands by the growing numbers of the elderly.
Somewhere deep in the corridors of Whitehall, I'll bet there is a conference going on to decide whether they should cure our ills or kill us off!
Bertie.

thats because the BBC is panicking that all the licence paying pensioners will be dead in the next 20 or 30 years, then they wont be able to bully the younger generation into buying one...

Thank you all for your replies! It has made interesting reading.

We would not be towing as we store our caravan at the C&C club site at Canterbury. They do the wee bit of towing for us! We are thinking about going for Christmas, and have been for several years. Both in our 70’s, it’s kind of do it now or we might regret not doing it.

We will carry on thinking about it for a few more weeks. We will take on board all of your comments and suggestions.

Thanks again for taking the trouble to reply xxx

We spent 9 days on the C&CC site at Canterbury last July, Before moving on to the C&CC site at Sandringham. First time we had stayed in Kent for decades.
