As a further thought. Do you have legal cover on your house insurance? Do they have a legal helpline, if so give them a ring. I found this a more reliable source of information than anywhere else.
You will not be able to speak to Trading Standards, ring their number and you will get put through to Citizens Advice. They are quite good but do not have that specialist knowledge.
sennen we also had to leave our van with the dealer to allow them to do a thorough check, this included up on a ramp to fully inspect the underside.
Having had a major bodywork repair done I was a bit apprehensive about the outcome of the check, but in the end all was good.

Although its not a good position to be in, I agree and disagree with all the comments here.
Firstly its easy for others to say off with the gloves and want to fight about it, coming up with consumer rights and solicitors and also thinking the dealer is on the take. The reality is the dealer may well be being honest and the van is falling apart, when checking over there is only so much they can check unless the van is put on a ramp and dismantled to find faults. It may well have been the place where you had the service work carried out not doing their job. We had a similar situation we part exchanged our folding camper for our caravan at a dealer over 200 miles away. I was asked on the phone about the campers condition, which I said was excellent for the year which I genuinely thought it was, based on this the dealer offered £2000 for it we accepted and went to collect. The dealer took the camper in his workshop and opened it up under the lights the canvas looked more like a net curtain how it never leaked I will never know, he dropped his price to £1500. I agreed and we done the deal the reason being the caravan we got was just what we wanted at a very fair price, and had he offered me £1500 in the first place I would have still accepted.
I think you need to ask yourself the same question, if the dealer had off offered you £500 less would you have accepted and if the answer is yes then you haven't really lost anything, or if the new caravan is the exact one you been looking for then at least you will be happy with your purchase

I have found that being a member of the Caravan Club gives me access to 24hr free legal advice.
I rang the number, spoke to the duty solicitor, who confirmed that we have a legally binding contract and the discovery of the fault was “after the event” and I should not be expected to give him up to £500 towards repairs.
He said my position was strengthened because I handed over the Caravan Registration document and the CHRIS document.
He initially offered £9 over the phone, then dropped to £8500 and wouldn’t budge.
On the day we did the deal my old van was on their website for £11500.

I contacted the Caravan Club legal assistance too, and was very disappointed to later discover significant parts of what I had been told were not accurate. Please seek as much other advice as you can and follow the consensus opinion.
It wasn’t Caravan Club i don’t think, it was a Legal Advice Helpline, but being a CC member allowed me access to the Duty Solicitor.
I also have a call booked in for tomorrow morning with Consumer Helpline.
He said his lads were removing the gas bottle, and noticed that two L brackets in the Gas Locket that secure the bulkheadti the chassis, had “popped’ the screws.

Dealer inspected van while it was attached to my car, he later said the fault only became apparent when he inspected it detached from the car.

He said it had been like this for some time.
I had never noticed anything or felt anything while towing.
And we have been to Spain twice this year.
Friends, in business have told me that we signed a contract and that’s it.
If your van is built the same as Swift the ply floor in the gas locker is a separate piece of ply to the main floor. I have had the screws work undone due to the weight of the gas bottles flexing whilst travelling. Tighten them up and loose again after next journey. Solution put superglue on screw does not undo again. If this is all that has happed with your caravan dealer is making a mountain out of a mole hill to screw you for money. It is nothing detrimental to the caravan.
It's not, Lunar and Coachman are constructed by a different method.

So, collected the van today and very pleased with it.
Dealer had removed front drawer unit and part of the facia and timber in the ‘old’ caravan.
He showed me in the gas locker where the screws had come out of the brackets and demonstrated how the body could be lifted up.
Worse than that, the floor about a metre from the front had a dangerous looking crack.
Without the cushions , facia and drawers, it was not possible to see just how much the body was moving when it shouldn’t be.
Like i said, we have been to Spain twice in it this year and were at CC site at Bury 10days ago.
Any way I was happy to give him a contribution tpwards the repairs.
Ours had two cracks running from the front to the axle, as I’ve said earlier this was a major repair.
Also as I mentioned before was concerned when trading in as I knew half the floor was a different colour and would clearly be obvious when up on a ramp.

Sounds like you were lucky nothing drastic happened when travelling - and that you decided to swap the van when you did!
Quite a concern to think any of us could be unknowingly towing a van with a similar problem.
What would worry me, is even if you can legally force the deal, if some thing goes wrong with the new caravan what service do you think you will get?
I bought a car which had a few faults and the garage simply repaired them, no hassle, no paper work, just bring it back we will repair. That is the service you want, but force their hand and then that service is unlikely.

and its not the dealer just trying it on which is always the favorite suggestion..

Well, he could have left the handbrake off and the caravan ran down a hill, smashed into a brick wall which popped the brackets and cracked the floor...but...that's just hypothetical of course
The OP has coughed up the 500 smackers and both the dealer and the OP are happy...bit of a pointless thread really
