Sorry you bought a duff one, but at least it is repairable all be it at your own expense. Don't assume buying from a dealer will get you anything much better! I looked at loads of only 2 - 3 year old vans last year from notable (I can't call them 'reputable' because they weren't!) main dealers, some were near wrecks, so many things wrong AND no service history, so no manufacturers warrantee to fall back on either! The 2 year old van I did buy was from a franchised dealer, but with a catalogue of minor problems none of which had been picked up or logged on their inspection sheet. They fixed them when I pointed them out, but if I hadn't seen them they would happily have delivered the van to me with all of them still faulty, obvious things like broken marker lights and locker doors not to mention failed ATC light are easily spotted if anyone can be bothered to look, there was much more that should have been picked up on a decent inspection! I'm afraid it's 'Buyer Beware' no matter where you buy from. You may have a better legal course of redress from a trade sale, but certainly no assumption of better quality! If fact the dealer I bought from, I have since learnt, has a pretty dubious reputation amongst those in the know!!!!

Our last van, a 1988 Elddis Tornado we bought privately for £500. Just a few minor things to fix, which I did myself at hardly any cost. Kept it and used it for 4 years then sold it for more than we bought it for.
The one we have now, bought from a dealer, cost us £1,100 with no warranty, but it's lovely. Obviously been well looked after, everything works, has motor-movers, I can't find any damp, and all it's cost me so far is two plastic roof vents which I fitted myself. This will be our third year with it, and we are looking forward to going away this year.
So, there are good ones out there but you do have to be very careful.
------------- Best Regards,
Colin
