My caravan is 27 years old and it has everything and does everything that a modern van does.

However, if an oil filled radiator is needed EHU is essential. A generator capable of running such an appliance would need to be industrial, especially if it was being use to run a mobility scooter battery charger at the same time, and other appliances. I have a 2kw generator which would struggle to cope, but I never use it for caravanning as it takes two of us to carry it and it certainly isn't quiet by any stretch of the imagination. I used to use it to run power tools on my boat moorings where there was no electricity supply. I definitely wouldn't want it running next to my caravan for any length of time.

Even the "quiet" generators make some noise. These are fine for running things like TVs, phone chargers, and other low consumption items, but definitely not for anything that contains a heating element of any kind, and that includes kettles, toasters, hair dryers, or hair straighteners.

Best Regards,
Colin

Am I missing something or does the OP's 20 year old caravan not work like modern vans?

I mean my fridge can run on gas, the heating runs on gas, the water heater runs on gas. My TV runs on 12v, most of the lights run on 12v.

If the OP's van does work like this would it be cheaper to get a solar panel that would charge the leisure battery during the day?

Yes it does work like modern vans thank you, and yes you have missed something , but I didn't feel the need to explain myself in depth , but because my wife is disabled we need 240v to charge her mobility scooter as well as having extra heating from the oil filled radiator , plus an array of other electrical items she may need...
Other than that , thank you for your advice..

the bottom line is you need gas for heating a small genny will do the rest..

Thank you all...
Gas heating it is, although we will have to make some modifications to meet our needs ( long story ).and maybe solar panels...
Glad I asked as some good advice given I didn't think about, as I was as so preoccupied with getting the best for my disabled wife's needs.. So a big thank you to all of you

a small genny (1000 watt) plus a good 20 amp charger will take care of the scooter charging needs..

you will still need some good 12 volts batteries these can be helped by solar panels and topped up with the genny as and when needed..

best of luck..
