Yes you are right of course gedsjeep, anyone can be scammed. I am not saying that I can't be caught, as I'm sure I could be, but all I am saying is that I am suspicious of everything and everyone when money is changing hands. Some people it would seem though take far more risks than I would ever dream of.

Buying something sight unseen? If it costs £10 maybe, if it costs £100+, probably not. When it comes to something costing £1,000+, most definitely not!

I'm a great believer in the saying that if something looks/sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

If you are selling something always get a receipt and have a witness. A couple of photos of the transaction isn't difficult to arrange either. I would also never deal through a third party, it just isn't worth the risk.

Nobody is beyond being scammed, but you can reduce the risk by taking a few precautions. If it doesn't "feel right", back away.

Colin

you are right to be suspicious colin, its so easy.

and the more honest the person, the easier they are to scam because they cant (or wont) believe that someone else would stoop so low. but they would. greedy people are easy to scam too, because they are so desperate to believe that the deal they think they have found is genuine.

20 iphones for £500 the lot. yeah, sure its real.

and deep down they want to believe.

not to pick on you, but your example above.

i`m buying your phone. i know i`m going to scam you. i know i can be traced through ebay.

i meet you in leeds, you hand over the phone and i sign the receipt and your mate takes a couple of (maybe covert) pics of of me doing the deal and chatting with you.

then paypal withdraws the money because i say i havent had the phone.

AHA! says colin, i have a signed receipt and a photo and a witness and everything.

only its not my signature, and the bloke you took pics of is my mate hamed and i look nothing like him....

and i watched the whole thing from a bench 20 yards away...

its never ending mate.

i have been scammed once online.

it was by a company that "almost" pretended to be the DVLA. i needed something doing with my license that should have cost £17. photo or something. this company had a website that looked like the DVLA, and came up first on a google search. the scam was that in very small print at the bottom they admitted that they were acting as a self appointed agency and charged you £100 for the service of them applying to the DVLA on your behalf.

the missis checked the bank and we realised what had happened. i tried everything, rang them, threatened them, tried recovering it through the bank and had a horrific time. all the advice sites were stuck as this company was flying "just" inside the law and nothing could be done.

till i realised that they were "selling" a service and hit them with the distance selling regulations and demanded the full amount back.

a cheque arrived in 2 days for the full amount.

i beat myself up over that one, because as a suspicious scouser, i didnt think it could happen to me.

wont bloody happen again though.

doesnt matter how careful you are, how many precautions you take, how clever you think you are, if you buy/sell at a distance you are open to being scammed. even bob. the bit about them having access to your bank account, they aint interested in that. why should they go to all that trouble when they can sell you a block of wood for £300 with you doing all the work for them.

I was referring to eBay/Paypal being able to take money out of your account to pay back the scammers.

ok, ebay cant do that bob as they dont have your account details and paypal cant take money out of your account, but they can reclaim disputed funds.

looks the same, smells the same but is legally different.

you can also un-link your bank account from your paypal account and never have that problem, you just transfer funds in when needed.

You can stop the payments, but your bank will so the same if you paid using that method or even a card.

You can block the payments leaving your bank but sadly its you that owe them the money, the scammers get clean away.

A lot of it is caused by buying something unseen and the lure of a bargain.

But even after doing all the checks things can still turn sour. Check the item, seller knows it and addresses and names match they have the right paperwork etc. Rare but it happens.

If one person reads this thread and stops for a second to take a step back on a purchase then its worth it.
Until everyone knows of the risks the scammers will keep earning. Then its onto the next scam.

Colin the only way of preventing being conned on ebay, like the phone story i told you about, is when some one collects an item and they have paid by pay pal, i tell them before they take the item they have to leave feedback saying they recieved the item, it's amazing how many people pay with pay pal when my ad states cash on collection only & i trust no one

That was originally my quote gedsjeep, and I'm sure the scammers are onto it. Having a witness to the transaction, and a receipt, is probably better than nothing though even if not by much. You would at least have some proof that a transaction did take place, which may be enough if it came to court.

My main point still stands though, it is better not to leave things to trust and to take some precautions. You can't eliminate the risks, but you can minimise them, and the scammers would rather deal with someone who is gullible than someone who isn't. I see it as rather like locking your house when you leave it, instead of leaving the door wide open. You can't stop a burglar breaking in, but you don't have to make it easy for them. If next-door looks easier they'll probably go there.

The wonders of E bay, Internet shopping and new methods of paying e.g pay pal.
How on earth did we exist prior to these so called modern conveniences?
My advice, avoid them like the plague and go back to the old tried and tested methods.
Yes I know there were always rogues but we just seemed to have granted them more scope.
I have purchased goods over the Internet and have always been disappointed, the goods never seem to live up to expectations, now I won't use it!

I know what you mean Bramidan, but there is good and bad. I have just bought some screw-in pegs off ebay and they are just fine. Came within a couple of days and exactly as I expected them to be. My nearest caravan dealer is about 12 miles away, and not in a direction I regularly go, so I would have to make a special trip there. I have never seen them there anyway. Before ebay we had mail-order, and that wasn't without problems either.

Leaving feedback is not a guarantee. NEVER accept paypal for a collection item.

They simply claim INR and they get a refund, you query the feedback they just say i thought i was supposed to leave feedback after paying. Or i left feedback for the wrong item.

Same as taking pictures of them etc, 99% the person you took the picture of wont be the account holder.
Plus ebay dont have their picture so they upload a picture of someone else..

Even cash on collection has its risks. Mate sold a camper and had some fake notes. Luckily it was a cheap one and not many fakes.

Your never 100% safe, but you need to avoid the obvious scams.

Certainly not as trusting as i used to be. Before ebay there were yahoo auctions. I bought laptops and transferred hundreds of pounds by bank transfer or mostly back then just paying cash into an account number..

More trusting times. Luckily everything i purchased arrived.

Would i do that today? No...

the problem is, most people dont have a scammers mindset. they think that a few precautions will see them good.

these people have no moral compass, no respect for age and see your property as theirs.

i use paypal for quite a few things. even placing orders from high street stores. i dont worry about using paypal as its secure as it can be.

but if i sold anything of value it would be cash.

i can feel a bent note a mile away so no worries there.
