I hope everything gets sorted for you . We once had a problem with a breakdown in France and were also insured through Green Flag . Our problem was the level of service we recieved after the breakdown or lack of it , anyway once home and sorted the wife made an official complaint and Green Flag duly awarded us £550 compensation . Maybe something to consider with all the stress and anxiety it must be causing you.
Thanks. Yes, it has caused me a huge amount of stress for both my parents and for me. I do definitely want to sumbit a formal complaint after all this, but since it's my dad's insurance policy I have to persuade him to submit it (even if I write it) and he's one of those people who doesnt like to make a fuss in the first place and now just really wants everything over and gone away... I'll see what I can do!

This is a brilliant example what this forum should be about.
Really hope you get the 'van back, but more importantly that your Dad recovers fully.
Please let us know how you're getting on
You know, I only just stumbled over this forum while I was googling various things to try to sort out what I was going to do, and signed up so that I could make the post. I'm very glad I did, and I'm glad it was a nice and simple and more or less instantaneous process to join... In my opinion a great forum. :D
My dad's doing a lot better, thanks, I'll let you all know when (fingers crossed) the 'van finally makes it home!!!

Sounds dodgy to me. The recovery company may have thought they were going to get the van for peanuts when the learnt Greenflag werent going to recover it back to your Dads home address. Probably thought due to his illness he wouldnt want or couldnt have gone back over to collect it in person.
Shame on Greenflag also for not being aware of how vans are measured. They are a recovery company who charge a premium to cover incidents such as this and staff should be aware of the technicalities involved.

I am also a fan of this forum. It was recommended to me some years ago and I have benefited in many ways.
I recently looked at Facebook forums on Caravans but it appears to have little control over input which can be quite misleading with wild guesses being used as advice.
This site is very well controlled .
The best bit? Aftwr all that it came towed *behind* a flatbed truck, not on it. The guy who delivered it said it was towing perfectly and there's absolutely no problem with the alignment...

What does he know he's a recovery truck driver. And it should have been ON the flatbed not being pulled behind it!

Well if he towed it all the way back to Scotland without any problems I would say he knows quiet a bit!
Indeed. It was a small flatbed designed to tow as well as carry, and he tows a lot of them. He was excellent at maneuvering it etc. (We had to unhitch and switch to our car to get it up the street as were on a bit of a hill and he could see that it would ground if he tried to turn the corner with it on the back of that long thing!)
Anyway, equal parts incredibly reassuring that there never was a problem with it in the first place, and really, really annoying that they created all that stress for nothing. Now I just need to persuade my dad to let me put in a complaint...

Don't be so sure.
We had a caravan repatriated from the South of France by a 'specialist' recovery company and they did over £7k worth of damage to it BECAUSE they towed it behind a flat bed recovery truck when it should have been on it.
By the way there was nothing wrong with the van when they picked it up.

I'm not really convinced it was a scam as such more a case of they couldn't be a.s.d and just thought up an easy answer to avoid them having to do what they were supposed to do.
Call me cynical but it seems a feature of modern attitudes, to much trouble, let's go for an easy route.
Rant over.
Glad you got the caravan back effectively what your father expected when he took out recovery!

The Op seems happy enough so maybe your driver wasn't a caravan lover or was working his notice.

..... I know it's claimed caravans should not be towed behind commercial trucks due to the hard suspension but... Bailey in Bristol deliver new vans with a flat bed. One on the truck and one towed behind.
A laden commercial vehicle (or any vehicle for that matter) has effectively softer suspension than when it is unladen. So Bailey's flatbed with a van on it is not as harsh to the towed van as it would be if it had the towed van alone. Presumably if they are dropping vans off, the towed van would be the first one to go.
