All,

Many thanks for the comments, this is all great stuff and invaluable. We have towed trailers for years (big trailers) so no problems on the logistics front, and I’m afraid neither myself o my wife are spring chickens, so license is not an issue :-)

We are looking at second hand at first, non dealer as we have heard a few ‘horror stories’ of dodgy dealers. We are looking max about the 5K mark, 4/5 berth. We have looked at a few, all private, and the people look genuine. This all helps me in knowing what to look for in more detail before I spend.

Does anyone know any good insurance companies? I need to get some costs for this as well.

Thanks.

Got to agree with SGThomas & take a registered caravan engineer to check it over, the guy who services mine charges £85 to do a full check then knocks £85 off the next service
Good luck with your search

I must admit I am a bit wary of buying privately, as I know there are a lot of sharks out there and there is no come-back. Many "private sellers" turn out to be anything but, however genuine they seem. We did buy our previous caravan from a private seller, but it was only for £500.

We bought our current caravan from a dealer, but as a "trade sale". There was no warranty as such, but being a dealer there is still a come-back via the sale of goods act. Didn't need it though as the caravan is great, an absolute bargain at £1,100. I didn't bother with an engineer's report, but I would have done if I'd been spending more. I am a fairly practical person anyway so I know what is likely to be viable.

Might be worth trying a dealer to see if they have any trade sales in. From what I have seen they never advertise them or even put them on their forecourt. They are probably not making much profit on a trade sale, so in my opinion they are less likely to rip you off.

Regarding insurance, we are with ClubCare through the C&CC, as they seem good value. I always shop around at renewal time but I haven't found anyone to beat them yet.

That is the thing. New for old cover is only available for caravans up to a certain age, and it very much depends on what caravan you own and where you are. A bit like car insurance really. With a caravan like ours the choice is a bit more limited as some companies won't insure caravans that old. When I check each year, as I always do, the difference in price is usually pennies. We paid £67.41 for our insurance in July, but then our caravan is 27 years old. A few companies I tried came near but I think the cheapest other one was about £70.

When I had my Volvo tow-car I had that insured with C&CC as well, and they were very reasonable, but when I changed the car the increase they wanted was crazy! I switched to the AA and they were very much cheaper, despite the fact that they had been very much dearer on the Volvo. I think it is very much the same with caravan insurance, one company will be very reasonable with one caravan, but want a ridiculous amount for another similar one.

To be honest, I used a comparison site and towergate were not the cheapest, it pays to read exactly what is and what isn’t covered

We were forever repairing Sprites in the seventies There was a common fault in the lower corners. We could get all the parts from sprite and once fixed the van was better than new. Caravans have always had problems. We knew what to look for and where to look. In the seventies caravans often resold with little depreciation due to demand. Some caravans get abused and require new upholstery carpets and repairs others are well loved and spotlessly clean and dry. It is of course true paying a few hundred presents less of a risk.

Absolutely. When I do a comparison I always check that the cover is broadly similar. I don't just go for the cheapest without looking at what is covered. I always use more than one comparison site too.

Every site we go on seems to have more Lunars than any other make. Reputation brings sales the trade saying is "quality always sells."

Really!!! I spent a year or so researching caravans before buying one (first caravan) and have never heard that tale before! A Google search doesn't bring up ANY related cases, so think that one is either isolated case (probably with more to it than Lunar's being inherently dodgy) or it's malicious 'brand' gossip which does seem to be rife and without foundation!

Very happy with my s/h 2016 Lunar.

Have to say when I was looking at 2/3 year old vans, didn't find many Swift group vans that didn't have broken cabinet catches/doors! That may have been (a lot of!) ham fisted owners or a inherent quality fault, can't say, but it put me off buying one as doubted longer term durability.

EVERY manufacturer has a bad spell where quality is not what it should have been, or the model has a design weakness, some brands do seem to have consistently higher quality than others, but at the end of the day, with a s/h van so many variables come into play, it's a case of assessing the individual van on it's own merits. A professional engineer's check is worth every penny as you will be reassured of chassis and appliance safety (gas & electric fittings etc.) as well as proper damp checking.

my first caravan was a series 5 bailey ranger 2007.

(just to add, i was conversing with a guy on a caravining grounp about damp repairs he was doing on his 2007 bailey ranger, in exactly the places as mine)

it was good in terms of spec and was very light but only 3 ,months after i bought it it got very Damp very quickly.

i can only imagine the dealer splashed on some captain tolleys and dried it out.

fortunately the dealer repaired it under warranty but after 6 months it was damp again. the delaer repaired it again and i traded it in for my current Coachman.

coachmans of the age of mine 2010 were built like brick... houses. but they are heavy so need a big car to tow them with.

i always liked the Adria caravans and i see they have a 10 year water ingress warranty now.

the only thing that would stop me buying an Adria is the Wet room shower/ toilet that seems to feature on even their largest caravan.

i like the separate shower in our coachman and one thing i didnt like in the ranger was the wetroom.

If you want to know what caravan makes are good, check out how many old ones there are around. No old ones means they don't last.

Having said that, how they are looked after makes a big difference whatever the make.

Having a few old caravans still going is no indication of general reliability. Most leaky old caravans have long since gone as shelters on building sites, stables , allotments Etc. The odd old caravan is a very small percentage of the thousands and thousands that have rotted , been scrapped , discarded or too old to be of value. Caravans are all much the same and share many of the same components. Some new caravans will still be around decades from now some will not. There are posts on this site of leaky rotten old caravans still being used and repaired as they go. I was on a CL this year when the adjacent caravan was being revamped on the pitch. The refit was looking good but major damp was evident and wall panels rotted.
