We don't use one, as its another thing to put on and off . If its dusty or mucky the windows could get scratches.
Last year on two long trips to France the van was very dusty due to dry weather, we would have had to wash the thing before putting a cover on. Just cleaned windows and did van once home.
Yes van gets mucky sometimes and in summer bugs get splatted!
Been caravanner since 1981 never had any damage despite many continental trips.
I give van a good polish once a year and use Vu Plex pespex cleaner on the windows, works fine.
Its a matter of personal choice.

We brought one for our caravan it now protects it from anything hitting it.
But as you say it a personal choice
