In our first van we had toilet compartment with basin but no shower tray or waterproofing and no hot water. We used a Porta shower, like a garden sprayer with a shower head attachment, filled from kettle with my wife standing in kids baby bath with shower curtain on circular rail suspended from ceiling.
I used to shower outside in windbreak set in tight circle.
I can remember having strip washes when we camped 57 years ago and the loo was a toilet tent, hole and spade for the backfill I laughed when my mate was inside and someone kicked a ball against the side - he screamed that his leg was in the hole, on one rally the steward turned up on his bike and proceeded to dig a hole with a big bowie knife - my mother thought he was an axe murderer lol

Why a nightmare for goodness sake? Can't remember when I last used a site shower, and I'm away about 130 days in the caravan. Cleaner, more hygeanic, and more comfortable when drying off. And you don't have to trek to the ablutions block!

So the method that we use every day at home is called the "navy" method is it? It's never occurred to us to do things in any different way.
Conservation of limited supplies of fresh water aboard Navy vessels. And no doubt most vessels.
.... and like you, it's normal practice for most people I think, perhaps just a little more parsimoniously practised aboard ship and caravan.
Just back from a short break, using above methods. A ‘navy’ shower used about 8 litres of water, judging by waste levels. A 40l aquaroll and 25l waste proved adequate for two people.
Well first time using the shower yesterday, Mrs went first, did all the points mentioned on gas navy shower, she now tells me that she doesn't want to trudge to the shower block again!
Anyway checked the water level she hadn't used much, so didn't need to refill, we have a 50l hog, left it about 15 minutes then had mine, no problems, only thing I added was a sqidgy to clear water off the door before opening.
We have just been away for fourteen nights, We used all our own facilities all the time.
I put the shampoo on my hair before turning the shower on.It doesn’t take long for a shower, just be quick.
It is so much easier not having to go to the site showers every morning.
I really don't understand why people get a bee in their bonnet about water usage.
Last weekend I stayed on a deserted WW2 airfield, no water supply so I took water from home. Aquarolls were too bulky to fit in my van with the bike and associated stuff so I took two Kampa 25L "jerry" style water containers.
My water usage was making tea (I drink lots of tea), dog drinks, washing up after saturday tea, washing up after sunday breakfast, sunday morning shower and sunday evening shower after I peeled my leathers off.
I used about 3/4 of one container so around 18L

easy to do if your on your own, but add kids into that and also showers rather than a bird bath and useage soon creeps up
I stayed in a guest house once, the landlady was a bit tight. Handed me an instruction sheet on practicing the Navy Shower.
First time I showered, I’d been in 2 mins & she was hammering on the door “that’s long enough, now lather up....”
I’m a big chap, the cubicle in our 2004 Challenger is fab.
Just don’t go re-enacting a shampoo commercials 😁
You can pop the heater on gas & electric to heat quicker, in fact we’ve used gas exclusively for the last 3 years because the element packed up.

I posted a similar article a fortnight ago querying tips to avoid getting scalded or frozen in the shower - we already use the navy system, I am considering buying a shower head with a trigger on so that the thermostatic lever ( mixer tap ) can be left in the same position once an ideal water temperature is found
I fitted a thermostatic mixer valve in the supply to my shower. I makes it so much easier. I used one similar to this one
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.
after 15 nights away with only the van shower we have decided it wasn't as bad as we feared and will probably use EHU only sites in future - the only thing I will suggest is use 2 full Aquarolls -changing between the 2 after the first person has showered - theres nothing worse than running out of water

I agree totally. We used our caravan shower for the 3 weeks we were away and somehow, my husband always managed to get in first. When he was done he always claimed there was loads of water left but on several occasions I was left shivering in the shower while he rushed to refill as the water ran out! Next time we are away, I am making sure that I get in first!
