i hope it a caravan low wattage fan heater you have brought .

why? as long as you have the amperage coming in your fine, 10 amps will run a 2000 watt no problem, ok you may have to turn it off for a few mins if you want to boil the kettle but thats not really a hardship is it?

Quite agree. We have been using a normal 2000 watt fan heater for many years and never a problem. It just means a little thought before switching on other electrical equipment, maybe switching it down to 1000 watt setting.

I do feel sorry for you. I soon feel the cold and now love the Alde heating in our caravan.

We use a normal domestic 2kw convector heater if it's cold overnight. It's only ever on the 1kw setting, and it's thermostatically controlled, but it keeps our van toasty. I must admit we don't go away when it's really cold, but even some evenings in May or September can be decidedly nippy. I imagine our heater would still warm our van up nicely even in January of February if we wanted it to though. We like the convector heater rather than a fan heater because it's virtually silent and can be left on all night if we need it. The only noise it makes is the occasional click of the thermostat.

We've just bought a Gobur Folding Caravan, an old (1990) model with no heating. Out in it a couple of weeks ago and one night out of the week, we thought it was cold. I put the fan heater on for 10 minutes and we were roasting. Then I twigged! I'd left the roof vent open!

I shut that and no more problems.

The van has outside walls in Aluminium and a GRP front and rear, but both are insulated with about 1 1/2" of Polystirene. It beats hell out of the old van we had, with the MDF type walls.

I wish I could afford the new model, but it's a bit out of my price range.

Does your van not have its own heater then?

The issue with older caravans is that a gas heater is probably not to be trusted certainly for overnight use. The 95 abbey I used to have had the heater vented through the floor which I think is not done now. The heater worked ok but as Colin mentions why bother with it & use your own gas when you are paying for Ehu & a 2kw convector heater cost about £20 used on the lower setting will keep the caravan as warm as you like.

If one is winter caravanning then probably best to take a separate electric heater of some sort even as a standby. I have seen posts on here from people whose heating in almost new caravans has failed due to some electronic glitch. Ok it will be fixed under warranty but not on the cold night you are in your caravan.

Yes it does, and it works fine, but I'd never leave it on overnight. The other thing is that we always go to sites with EHU because we have a mains-only fridge, so as we are paying way over the odds for electricity anyway, why not use it.

Yes my gas heater vents through the floor Billy.

We have the Alde heating, its very good, we just turn the thermostat down at night. You can set it on timed just like at home.
We have a ceramic fan heater which we used to use in previous vans but is occasionally used in the awning now. It has a cold setting so useful in summer!

Doesn't Alde heating use up your gas? If I'm going to pay rip-off prices for electricity, I'm going to use it wherever possible. Most sites seem to charge between £3 and £5 a night extra for an electric pitch, and I don't use that at home for both gas and electricity, even with the central heating on. I always knew it was a rip-off but it really came home to me last year when I was on a site with metered electricity. It was July so it was only my battery charger and fridge, and occasionally a kettle, but we used less than £3 of electricity for a whole two week holiday!

The Alde is gas or electric, like you we normally use sites with hook up.
The only time its been on gas is during annual services!
It has 3 settings 1, 2 and 3 KW for heat and a variable control for water, which we set to half.
On our recent trips away we used a no facilities site, the hot water was lovely for showering.
The heating did actually come on a couple of nights, wife set it to 15 or thereabouts.

I did wonder, as I'm not familiar with Aldi heating only having an old caravan. It does sound good. I too would run it on electric whenever I could then.

Our water heating is gas-only, but if I had one with electric as well, as some of the later ones did, that would be on electric too. Our water heater is good though, warm water in about 10 minutes and hot water in about 20 minutes.

To clarify; your van has its own electric heater, but you dont use it overnight. But you do use a regular domestic heater plugged in overnight?

My caravan has its own GAS heater, and it has gas water heating. The caravan gas heater is what I don't use overnight. Overnight, or even on a cold morning or evening I use a normal domestic 2kw convector heater.

On odd occasions I might have a day or maybe two on a site without EHU, and it's on those occasions when I would use my caravan's gas heater. Doesn't happen very often though, manly because of our mains-only fridge.
