Problem could be, the MOT will be made so difficult to pass we will just have to scrap our cars, when those in control decide they no longer want them on the road.

If that does happen, it will probably be the end of my driving days, as the only electric vehicle I will ever afford is a mobility scooter, and that will probably have to be second-hand.

This won't be as bad for me however as it will be for the multitude of younger people who are in the same boat but need their cars for work. At least I'm retired, live in an area with quite good public transport, and am entitled to free travel on both buses and trains. Holidays, if any, will have to be by coach and in hotels though as I won't be able to use my caravan.

Well that is certainly one possibility Brian. They'd still have to get the van there though, and they'd still have to be able to afford an electric car. No chance for me though so I'll hang onto my diesel for as long as possible.

Exactly, webmaster, and is what I was referring to in my original posting.

Yes, a totally new approach to the idea of caravanning.

"Like a motorhome" No, like a caravan. There are many who simply do not want a motorhome, preferring a towed caravan. There is huge potential here for development.

What exactly is the point of this, when a vehicle - of some sort, is still needed to pull it?

The problem is that cars are getting heavier and heavier, and yes the batteries are getting small and lighter, but that increase in performance from the batteries is being negated by the increase weight in the car.

I mean I can get nearly 900 miles out of my Mondeo if I drive conservatively, I really cant see electric cars getting anywhere near that even in 35 years time.

Read the article ! It's clear what they have in mind, whether it will work in practice is anyone's guess:

"The range of electric towing vehicles is greatly reduced when combined with a traditional caravan or trailer – in some cases by up to 70%. This would mean a reduction in range from an average of 500 km to only about 100-150 km. Alko's exciting solution is an electric 48-volt drive integrated in the trailer chassis. This means a higher range can be supported, and there are more advantages"

Because those in charge have never moved the goalposts to achieve their goal.

Remember when Diesel was better for the environment and was cheaper than petrol?

Remember when you could buy brand new diesel cars with zero road tax?

Then all of a sudden diesel is bad for the environment and they jacked the price up for diesel cars.

And the most recent thing the government is talking about is making us pay "per mile" for driving, this is because of the huge hole in the road tax brought on by increase in sales of all electric cars.

Ive had 3 mondeo's the last being the current shape, christ i was lucky to get 600 miles out of any of them.

The average mileage in the uk is 12/13k per year which works out at around 250 miles per week, if cars require refueling once a week i honestly cant see the hardship in that.

You can already buy a electric car that will tow a large caravan, Ok its expensive but as with everything these will come down and be affordable to everyone.

Probably keep our Santa Fe a bit longer, then have a hybrid or plug in hybrid. By 2035 I will be too old to tow!

Diesel was cheaper than petrol when nobody wanted a diesel car because they were noisy, smelly, and slower than a constipated snail. Then diesel engines became much more sophisticated and a lot faster. They started to become desirable, so the price of diesel went up.

Road tax for electric cars won't be free once they become more than a tiny minority of road vehicles. It has been suggested many times that road tax should be scrapped and the revenue be recovered by increasing the tax on fuel, which would be much fairer, but that will be very difficult to do with electricity, so it looks like road tax is here to stay. Once EVs become more common, road tax for them will rocket.

It would be possible to recover the tax by taxing electricity but that would need all owners of EVs to have a smart meter.
