That was a bit harsh to say mentioning S & S couplings is stupid, I think they are a great solution for transporting a regular bicycle, and as already mentioned by JTQU folk may not be aware.

SJS Cycles ( Bridgewater) sell bikes equipped with them on a regular basis, along with a few other bike builders.

As for what folk spend on a bike, well I am not a bike fanatic, but the Rohloff gear hub on my bike, would cost over £1000 on it’s own to buy today.

Had my Rohloff since 2004, and it runs better now, than when it was new.

In my opinion to answer the ops question the car roof is still the best option & far less complicated.

I honestly cant see any reason to cut a bike frame up, when a bike box will carry a bike safely.

We took 50 riders to portugal last year for a 400km charity bike ride, bikes ranging from 1k to 15k all in bike boxes or bags

the average joe would spend about £300 on a whole bike! take a look at halfords! (that is the main place anyone turns to to get a bike in the uk) at a push people might up that if they are after an electric bike to approx £600 each bike

You're right Bessie re the OP's best option in my opinion too & it wouldn't be UKCS if we didn't have Francais's big bucks OTT solutions but for certain circumstances those couplings are a good solution. More likely in an expedition, self-contained, unsupported context.

The OP was asking specifically about transporting bikes in the caravan.

We have previously transported inside the caravan. If you use sheets etc to protect bikes from scratching and damaging internals together with bungees attached to bed slats or suitable anchorages, that’s fine, but if caravan is small it restricts activities inside during journeys. We turned the handlebars for going in and out.
We bought Thule bike racks off Gumtree very cheaply and mainly use them. But my tow vehicle is a fairly tall SUV and unless you are fit and strong, loading heavier mountain bikes can be problematic. I use the caravan step but it’s not always straightforward without an assistant!
As the years go by, it doesn’t get any easier!

A matter of choice really. We store in France, so they are inside the van anyway while there.

If the OP has a dog, then take it with you when you go off cycling, good for the legs.

A cheap bike in the shop I work in is £450 & they fly out! There are some awful bikes on the market at a lower price - we see plenty come into the workshop with born-again covid cyclists with their £50 government repair vouchers!

Yep, like Spiritburner, my son who works in a bike shop, told me that some of the bikes that came into his store on the back of that £50 voucher scheme had not seen the light of day for many a year, and were well beyond a £50 resurrection.

marg, people who buy bikes from halfords either have no choice (cycle to work scheme) or dont know any better. terrible products built down to a price point and maintained by "mechanics" that dont understand them.

their electric bike range is plagued by so many faults that they dont even repair them, you are just handed a whole replacement bike.....that breaks again.

my missis had the metis, around the price point you are talking about, i stripped the electric kit off and put it on another bike as the parts were terrible. i had the vengeance e model, motor and battery packed up within 2 months, was handed a vulcan e as a replacement, sensor broke 3 weeks later. was handed another, same fault a couple of months later. was handed another, forks were faulty as the bike hadnt been built correctly by halfords in the first place. was handed another replacement which i sold without even riding it.

i see these words said on here all the time, you get what you pay for.

as halfords is the main place where those who are buying a bike would turn to regardless of the quality of the bike or not, its still their first choice of business to buy from (no i dont work or have anything to do with it) its easier for them! its open 7 days a week! and simply put there arent that many smaller bike shops around anymore, certainly not where we live. most of the bikes are ok for the sort of riding that gets done esp in the last 9 months for excercise, ok they arent specialist bike sellers, but then again those that bought in the last 9 months arent mainly the sort that would have bought that type of bike and have no use for one, most bikes will be returned to the back of their garage and not see daylight for a long time once all this covid stuff is over. just because you may have been a previously to covid mountain biker etc, you are biased, the general population has no need of a bike that cost £1500 when a £200 bike would do the same thing so im sorry to say your wrong, i am not out of touch with the cost of bikes, average bikes that people use to do average trips on average tarmac/light terrian use
