Totally the sites fault. If they have barriers to control traffic flow of differing heights they should have safety measures in to stop this happening (HSE machinery at work act). The usual bare safety is a photo cell across path of barrier however when car goes past it leaves a gap between car and caravan for the beam to go through hence the top barrier starts to come down. This gap should be covered by a safety, whoever fitted barriers in first place should have done a risk assessment highlighting this.

Yes you are right there. The operator should have been trained to operate the barrier aswell. I will do my research on this.

So looks like car insurance and caravan insurance do not want to even look into claiming for damage on my behalf so ill have to organise it myself or use a solicitor.

Might be worth that everyone does check their own insurance to make sure damage to caravans is covered whilst being towed.

If the height barrier is controlled by an operator, I can't see it having any safety system (light beam etc), as this may conflict with manual operation, suggesting operator error of caravan site person.

If there is a safety beam system, then for safety, with a queue in front, you need to stay behind both barriers and wait for the congestion to clear, then proceed - so driver error.

If driver error, your car insurance should cover the damage to the barrier, BUT, on private land (campsite), they may have a 'get out of jail free card'

Most caravan insurance policies would cover your caravan damage.

Provided your caravan is covered by a comprehensive caravan insurance policy then this insurance will pay for repairs to caravan regardless of fault by owner or any other party.

Your insurer might decide to recover their losses from site owner site owner who would pass it to his own insurer & let them fight it out. None of that needs to concern insured caravan owner.

Caravan is covered while towing by your car insurance for third party claims ie repairs to other peoples property like the site owners damaged barrier possibly. Your car insurer will not pay for repairs to your caravan. That is why you insure a caravan separately.

As far a I can see your damaged caravan should be covered by your own caravan insurance. Regardless of who they decide is at fault they should pay for repairs.

definitely the responsibility of the camp site as their barrier caused the damage. There should be a sensor to prevent this happening, as with ordinary car parks etc.

In fact you should be claiming against them for damage to your van IMHO
