One thing that is a guarantee, is that you MUST be practical, or have plenty of money. There are always 'niggles' with caravans. The more they move, the more goes wrong. You are looking to stay put, so may be spared some issues caused by travel. But you still need to know how everything works, and why it doesn't, on odd occasions. It is very much trial and error. If you hook up with a local District Association in one of the clubs, or even on here, someone will be happy to give you pointers as you learn. You need to start with a half decent 'van though. I would look to pay maybe 8K. That is dear enough to pay when you dont know if you will stick at it.
Caravan finder is a good site to see what you are likely to get for your money.
If you are looking on ebay please be aware that there are often fraudulent listings. They are usually easy to spot - second picture is usually their email address and they give virtually no details about the article or may just say selling for a friend. If one looks genuine and the seller says you can't view because they live in Orkney, they are currently abroad etc but hes happy to get it delivered to you and your money is held safely until you are satisfied - its a scam. If you use ebay you are probably already aware of this but thought I would mention it.
Thanks Gari for the good advice, yes I'm always wary of ebay and Facebook market place. Kinnen's in Manchester have been there many years, I can go and actually have a look around. Wouldn't buy online. I'll look on the caravan finder link. Thanks

It may be advisable to start a second posting, as this is a separate issue, but if you use the search option, it will definiteley give some answers to your query.

Often there will be people packing in, and looking to sell up lock stock and barrel. These are good bets. I got my present outfit from an older couple that had decided it was too much for them. Usually the van will be in good condition, as the age of the owner as opposed to anything being wrong with the van, is the reason for them selling. You will get lots of accessories thrown in - the aforementioned 'aqua-roll' likely to be one of them! This is about the time they will decide they are not wanting to continue with storage/pitch fees, and look to offload, now things have just started moving again.
Don't forget to check whether the outfit you buy will be within the allowance allowed by your licence. If you passed before 1st Jan 1997 there are different rules than if you passed after.
Licences issued from 1 January 1997
If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 January 1997 you can:
drive a car or van up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM
tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg
MAM is the limit on how much the vehicle can weigh when it’s loaded.
You have to pass the car and trailer driving test if you want to tow anything heavier.
Licences issued before 1 January 1997
If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997 you’re usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg MAM. View your driving licence information to check.
You’re also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

By the way where you get it, thanks.
Mine was advertised in the CAMC magazine. Up at 9k, ended up paying 7.5k for a 3 1/2 year old van + loads of gear. I did take a risk on a damp issue, which required a £200 fix (reseal of front windows), but the van on a forecourt was 13-14k.
Will you be towing the caravan to the seasonal site of your choice? Is your car capable to towing that caravan? To get an outside organisation to tow it will be very expensive. If you decide to ask a mate, you may have insurance implications. Although not required it is always wise to insure a caravan for damage, theft and third party.
