Yes with a conversion bed you would be stuck with the cushions. Mine are quite comfortable though. If we are going to the pub in the evening, what we do is get the sleeping bags out before we go. All we have to do when we get back is climb in or fall in, whichever is most appropriate.

My van and my method is the same as Colin's, it's not that much hassle once you have it well practised. Making up the double bed with the pull out slats is only slightly more trouble, and unless 'tired and emotional' to the point of falling down after a few beers, perfectly achievable with ease. Where it all starts to get too much trouble making up convertible beds is if you insist on sheets and duvets etc., sleeping bags are the quick trouble free option.

I find the seat cushions perfectly comfortable to sleep on, in fact I probably sleep better in the van on the convertible seat/bed than I do at home in a proper bed!

Why not try and find a site with a tow on or tow off facility then size is not a restriction? They put the caravan onto the pitch for you and when finished tow it off again and store it. The other possibility is a seasonal pitch where the caravan stays all year round so you are not confined to a small caravan. Chances of a fixed bed in a caravan with a low MTPLM of under 1400kg are very slim.

There’s loads of caravans with MTPLM under 1400kg, I’ve been looking at them!

That is correct, but all are small with side ebds and small bathrooms where shower and bathroom are all in one., However on Caravanfinder there is a nice Bailey Orion 430 2011 with side bed and large bathroom. Our caravan has the island bed which is walkaround so do not disturb partner when getting up during the night.

I guess I need to go and look at a few to decide what I can / can’t live with.    I wouldn’t be overly bothered about using the caravan shower if on a site with a decent shower block.

I have been toying with the idea of chopping the car in for something with better towing capacity, but I would lose money, I love the car I have and I am finding some nice vans which tick most of my boxes...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/caravan-details/202201171440935

One question, do these cassette toilets rotate at all? Or would one have to either sit scrunched up like a squashed spider, or have to ride "side saddle"? Apologies for the unwanted imagery...

As for TV, I wonder if I can get some kind of fold up bracket to hang beneath the cupboards on one side?

Generally the newer ones with a rounded bowl and seat rotate. The bench type in older vans do not but will face into the room.

Firstly the toilet. I looked at all sorts of vans/layouts when researching (I took well over a year and looked at a LOT of vans), I came to the conclusion that most side/corner bathrooms (often compact layout with shower over toilet/basin and/or flip down basins etc. were not just a tad claustrophobic, but I really didn't fit in them very well (I'm a big bloke) and (simulated!) using them proved they were uncomfortable and I was literally banging into much of the structure! Decision made, a decent sized end bathroom with proper separate shower cubical it had to be. The more modern toilets do swivel the whole basin/seat, so you can find a comfortable position IF the room is big enough, but the 'bench' style are fixed seat. Another 'feature' I didn't like in the compact bathrooms was the shower curtain designed to limit how much shower water splashed EVERYWHERE! They tend to stick to you and 'shrink wrap' you in my experience. Another big down for me was that if you use the shower, the toilet floor (and much else!) is then wet for ages afterwards, OR you have a big clean up/drying job! To be fair, I did go into it with every intention of using my on-board facilities all the time, not just if no site facilities.

TV. Many vans are already fitted as standard with a adjustable TV mounting arm that extends and rotates a considerable amount, if not fitted, can be bought as an accessory (but finding a suitable mounting point requires thought, it needs a robust wall/partition/cabinet and/or maybe reinforcement - caravans are very thin and lightweight construction!). Generally wise to remove TV during travel and stow safely if it's a largish/heavyish one, most brackets feature a simple slip on/off TV mount, but also retract to a secured stow position.

^^^ Thanks for the advice Monty.   I might just it for night time no. 1s, I'm quite a big bloke too so again, I'll have to look at a few and see what I can live with.

I can cope with a trek to a shower block in the morning or evenings, I managed it OK when I used to camp in a tent.

Tow bar installation booked in for a week Wednesday, then the following Tuesday I will do an introduction to towing course!   After that, I will start going to look at some 'vans.
