Maybe it's an age thing being a pensioner etc, but I don't see knowing the level of my LPG is a £72 issue?

I can simply look at the Gaslight bottle, give it a slight shake and immediately see where the level is.

With my "cheap skate" 11kg steel I park at the side of the van, just attempting to lift it gives quite a good idea how things are going, then there is my £5 digital luggage scale if I want to increase the precision.

Overriding all, I could not possibly miss the comment I would receive if we actually had an unplanned run out.

I use a cheap thermometer gun,as you run the probe down from the top of the tank, the temperature drops by about 2 degrees when you get to the gas level

I have gas light as well give the bottle a shake and see what's left
easy, i put a full one in at the start of the season and the old one then becomes my home bbq bottle so i use all the gas

my truma ultrasonic thing arrived..

i am not entirely happy with it.. it works but is very hit and miss.. it often shows no liquid when there is liquid and needs several tries to get a reliable reading..

I think that's a comment made by others on reviews! They sort of work but rather too expensive to be so unreliable. Think they appeal to (and get ***** approval from) people who generally have no idea of how to check contents any other way!

£5 luggage scales are pretty much spot on and don't care what your cylinder type is, so universal, not steel only!

Hopefully you can either return it for refund, of find it reliable enough with multiple checks that you can actually use it.

i will keep it.. what i will say is having to remove a gas bottle to check what is in it is 100% no no for me.. so the weighing scale idea is not for me.. what i wanted and dont mind paying for it is quick and easy way to check gas level in situ.. so far the ultrasonic thing though far from perfect still seems the best way..

Gas price per Kg is higher than standard cylinder:
FloGas 6Kg steel propane = £4.29/Kg (£25.75/refill)
Flogas Gaslight 5Kg = £6.75/Kg (£33.75/refill) BUT if you are after lightweight cylinders, that compares well against Calor Lite which are like hens teeth to find anyway and official Calor agents seem to be charging £8.33/Kg (£50/refill)!

Flogas in all sizes seems to be far easier to find stock of than Calor, and I think they now claim to have more outlets than Calor.

Just acquired a 5Kg Gaslight as a replacement for my existing 6Kg steel Calor as that's soon in need of a refill, and I really need to lighten the nose weight of my van which is easier said than done as inherently VERY nose heavy.

Not in my mind, it’s propane as well so it won’t freeze like calor, I was once in Sherwood Forest when it was snowing my neighbour on the site had to go home because his gas system froze

Did you mean Campingaz instead of Calor? Campingaz 907/904 cylinders are Butane, with Calor you can get both Propane(Red Cylinders) or Butane(Blue cylinders) in same physical size cylinders, but the nominal weight depends on which gas.

FloGas Gaslight is only available with Propane, as is the Calor Lite.

The gas system itself shouldn't freeze unless moisture has got into the system, but Butane certainly stops converting from liquid to gas below about 4C, and is only really suitable for summer use. What people often overlook is that the cylinder chills as gas is drawn off, so it may start OK with a low ambient of say 10C, but as the cylinder itself chills it will stop giving gas. Once it returns to the ambient temp, it will gas again for a while until it becomes too chilled again.

Sorry when i say Calor i mean the blue bottle which is butane, The guy was in a new to him van, his electrics kept blowing and then his gas stopped working. But it was snowing outside.

So for me gaslight is a no brainer

I use a Gaslow bottle, it has a level indicator on the top which works off a float inside the bottle.
The beauty of a refillable bottle is you don't need to run out before re filling

Gaslow/Safefill etc. are great if you use enough gas to recoup the significant investment in the cylinder, in the region of £200 upwards AFAIK, but many of us would never come even close to that!

I'm still on the original 6Kg Calor that came with the van 4 years ago, and it's been used off grid a couple of times. Mostly use EHU and the electric hob on the cooker, and electric water/space heating. Gas occasionally gets used on oven and/or second cooker burner. I always use the onboard shower, and cook for myself, but hardly make any impact on the gas. In fact the service engineer usually uses more gas during the service checks than I do in a year!
