Taking a rough look at Parker's Guide (and it IS a very rough look as performance figures vary with trim levels etc. - and I don't know yours, so I picked a random one!), you have in the region of 127bhp/170Nm torque, which is less than my car's, quite noticeable on torque (mine's 230Nm and 130bhp, and torque is King in the towing world!), and whilst the tow capacity is quoted at 1300Kg, the kerb weight is only 1245Kg, so being a novice at towing the 85% of kerb weight 'rule' would be wise to follow, making a trailer of around 1060Kg quite feasible. Compared to my more powerful car and the heavier van I tow, that looks to be perfectly workable if you wanted to hang on to your present car.

Under 1100Kg (the 85% of kerb weight figure is not cast in stone and doesn't have to be adhered to rigidly) doesn't give you much scope on a caravan, but there are a few. I plugged max 1100Kg MTPLM in Caravan Finder website (without any other constraints) to give you some idea of what's in the marketplace: https://www.caravanfinder.co.uk/caravan_search_results.html?be=all&px=1000000&mx=1........

You really do need to double check all the figures for YOUR specific car, as they may vary from the rough ones I obtained with speculation..

These figures they give are all very impressive, but they do not take into account multiple car occupants and all their requirements for a week/fortnight etc. So to start anywhere near the given 'accepted' numbers is folly. As you would likely still be grossly overloaded.

A tow car needs to be on top of the job anytime in any conditions - particularly windy ones. So thats a car with a bit of weight/oomph, or a trailer that doesnt weigh a lot. Which knocks all caravans of the required size into a cocked hat for this car.

Our current caravan cost us just £1,100 from a dealer as a trade-sale 4 years ago, and we have already used it once this year. It certainly won't be the last. The previous caravan we had was bought as a private sale for £500, and we had that 4 years too. It was still usable when we sold it for a bit more than we paid for it. There are some bargains out there but you do have to be careful. A caravan like we have now would probably be towable by your car, although we prefer a bit more power so we have a 2 litre diesel X Trail, but mainly for its high driving position. I was starting to struggle getting out of a Volvo V70.

Regarding towing with a petrol car, our first tow-car was a 1966 Ford Mk2 Cortina automatic, and it towed our Sprite Musketeer just fine back in the 1970s.

Best Regards,
Colin
