My van has a 100watt solar panel on the roof with a Truma controller which acts as a smart charger, matching the charge current and voltage to the batteries requirements. I used the movers today to get it off our drive which is a fairly long stretch up a 1 in 6 slope. All went well.
The battery was new when we bought the van new in Feb 2016. It's only a 70 AmpHour and has never let us down. For me, that proves teh benefits of a proper smart charger regime.
Previous vans have used the onboard charger only, and I've had several battery failures, all at about 2 years old.
When I were a lad, cars had batteries with a 2 year guarantee and they always failed immediately after 2 years. Cars then had very crude voltage regulators only so notoriously overcharged.
