Supply and Demand! It's a commercial world, and no two ways about it, the demand for LPG in motor vehicles has gone into free-fall, so petrol station forecourts have abandoned supplying it over past few years.
I believe highest demand for it now is mostly leisure (Safefill and the like, and fitted tanks to MHs) and domestic heating, which is catered for by different outlets - more like delivered to user's premises as with fuel oil.
Looking at the price of LPG from some outlets, it's not even half the price of Calor/Flogas refills per/Kg, and the price has risen far steeper than Petrol over past year, so the appeal may be waning for the leisure market too!
It's going to take a lot of refills to recoup your investment in a £200 cylinder at today's prices! On my reckoning, over 100 full refills before saving money unless you can only seek out only the cheapest outlets, and then maybe in 60-70 refills! In the past, prices were better and it looked a better investment.
I've used just over TWO 6Kg Calors/Flogas in my 6 years of caravanning, so you can see my lack of enthusiasm! I've had a couple of weeks off grid in that time, and use my gas cooker daily on every trip! If I'm still caravanning in 30 odd years to see any monetary gains, I'll be in the Guineas book of records for a number of points of longevity I suspect!
Like a lot of things, times change, Safefill and the like may well have seen their day on a wider marketplace, and become quite niche!
