You can buy a number plate maker and black plates on the net for £500 so if were ringing cars i know what i would do. I had a chat with a traffic copper pal of mine and he stated that if the plate is:

1) readable

2) the correct colour including the lettering

3) fitted in the correct manner

4) matches the two car

he would not even give it a second glance never mind pull it over.

Which is what is looked for on a car at MOT time!

Also worth remembering, if you do have to tow a trailer and had to change vehicles at short notice there is always the use of the rear plate from the tow vehicle, these are usually secured by two screws.  (it was a traffic cop told me that one!)

as stated earlier th only law on plates id at mot (as long as they meet teh required standard then thats ok for me)

the police can cheack a plate and insurance and mot and tax with either a pnc (police national computer) or with a camara van.

if you have a new style mot (computerised) u can tax your vehicle online and they check if its moted or insured so as long as your reg no is legit it wouldnt matter if your van plate was upside down cos they will be able to tell if ots leagal

This has been a constructive and useful discussion and as usual with the camping and caravanning community, common sense is the norm.
