The sad thing is, that statistically people with detectors (of whatever type) have significantly less accidents.

...and significally more cash in there pockets from not paying the speeding fines.

Thats cause you can't cause an accident sat in a french or spanish jail you will also find spanish police very hot on use of indicators to change lanes

Erm, I meant not paying the fine by not speeding.

IThere's a similar thread running on "Camping/Caravanning abroad " forum. I tend to agree with Romany. What's this:- "it doesn't detect a speed camera, it just staes where they are...." Hmm- aren't we just playing with words here??

The UK Transport Minister has given his seal of approval to GPS systems which detects cameras (or as alsparker would say "states where they are situated" and makes it clear that he doesn't care what it akes to slow you down, whether it's aroad map shwoing where the cameras are or a TomTom etc. So, in the UK no problem, not illegal- but when googling I';ve seen many statements saying that's not the case abroad - eg

"European countries which have outlawed camera detectors, include France, Belgium, Greece, Austria, Turkey, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Ireland and Norway. In Luxembourg the maximum penalty is a prison sentence of between eight days and three years. The Republic of Ireland also deals harshly with offenders and a six-month prison sentence is possible"

I'd still be interested in the definitive answer!

Not at all Telbell. most speed cameras are placed in a position that has been designated as a black / accident spot, and its the same for most mobile sites too. The talex system will also warn you of local schools , and many other  functions too, read up on it here  If your traveling through a place that you are unfamiliar with the system warns you of the site but in my case I take it as a warning of an unseen hazard area and to be even more on my guard especially when towing.

It's amazing isn't it. I thought the idea of speed cameras were to reduce speed/accidents in certain areas. Anything that warns you of a camera ahead will slow you down, which is what they wanted in the first place wasn't it?

Someone's going to tell me now it's all about gathering revenue, because if you are not aware of a speed cam up ahead you can get zapped for going 2-3 miles over the limit. Safety or pure money gathering?

i found more instances of "flashing" in France than here , especially hgv drivers who 99% of the time flash me in while overtaking and always thank me when i flash them in. i also notice french drivers tend to flash oncoming traffic in the event of a radar trap , accident, or random police checks ahead.

Not when its like our next door neighbours which not only tells you where they are and warns you when aproaching them also tells you if its operational or not you would be surprised how many are not actually working
