try not to make it too complicated - with a bit og thought and alook round b and q im sure you can come up with something - it doesnt have to be motorised!! just a simple winding mechanism !!!!

With regards to electric winches: I bought one of those cheapies off eBay - approx £40ish. I'm sure it would have no problems pulling any caravan up a slight incline on a good hard surface. I bought the winch for occasional use to pull broken down vehicles onto a car transporter trailer, a job it handles with ease. However, the winch is clearly a 'budget' item and it is a bit on the slow side but it does get the job done. As with most 'budget' items it won't stand much abuse and there's no way I'd rely on it for commercial or industrial use but it serves it's purpose for my needs.
When we were trying to get a folding camper up a small incline to the garage door we found we could not push it up alone ( I say we but I mean ME) so, we purchased a Hitchdrive and with about 2"clearance each side of the folding camper, using the Hitchdrive I found I coulld get the unit up the incline and into the garage on my own without the f/c scratching the sides.
We use it now to do the same job with our caravan. Only trouble is can anyone help me get the caravan out of the garage. Only joking. The Hitchdrive uses a couple of winder type handles to move the unit it attaches to back and forward and up and down.
Totally off topic, I see from your avatar that you are in the ambulance service, i'm a technician with St John and know exactly what you mean about the phone being wired to the kettle, or that when you take your first bite of your hamburger someone at a moto x event will go flying over their handlebars.
I found the Hitchdrive ok in fine waether, but as soon as it rained, the wheels would slip on the oil soaked road, found the winch a far more easy method. Guess its a case of personal preferance at the end of the day Jon
Have decided that the best option is probably going to be to get a manual hitch drive when I can justify it. Until then, as Nikki (and others) suggested I think I will try 'knocking up' the neighbours!!
Cheers Everyone!
------------- As every ambulance man knows, the actiavation 'phone is wired directly to the kettle
