what about buyimg an older tow car like alate 80'searly 90's granada(scorpio)type or something similar. volvo's etc......

Do you know Richie, that's exactly what I started to think the other day, too! I'm researching Volvo estates now - on the basis that it could well work out cheaper to look for one with sky high mileage and a volvo service history than to try and limit my choice of van to something I can tow now. At least people make copy Volvo parts (unlike my suzuki which is so rare a car that parts are only available at main dealers (and they charge what they like!) Plenty of recon suzuki parts, but not for a Baleno Estate! Thanks for the advice Richie, good idea!

If you go for the older square type volvo estate and fold the back seats down you would easily get a double mattress in there and you could sleep as long as you want while the kids are in the van having food etc - Job Done

Wow! Now thats something I definitely hadnt thought of chalkie!

We have got an old Volvo 740 estate that we tow with, it's a brilliant car and it doesn't struggle except for some of the nastier long hills lol, it has now got 193k on the clock and still going but it drinks more than Gazza on a bad day when we have the van on the back.
Oh and I dont think that campsites would take to kindly to you sleeping in the back of an estate car lol.

One of the reasons we bought a 1988 Castleton is how light it is despite having a very high interior/equipment spec. A little under 720k a pleasure to tow!

Thanks Le Phantom - my current spec is cold water (via a footswitch!), lights of the battery and electric hook-up! Having said that - caravan & awning for £900 from a dealer, and that included starter pack, new tyres (and they replaced the fridge post-sale cos it wouldnt light on gas, so I dont think I did badly!
So anything is high specced compared to that - but what spec do you get in the Castleton? 720 sounds a fantastic weight, hope I find one of those. Is it a five berth?

Okay, the Castletons came in a 2 berth (we have) & a 4 berth - I don't know of a 5 but I could be wrong - the spec even on the 88 is on board water pump, shower, full electrics, 4 way fridge, 3 ring cooker/oven, casette toilet, aerial point for TV and fly screens. Oh and an Alko hitch/frame as standard
