BACS payments take three days; the only way you could do this is with a CHAPS payment - which is same day - but the buyers bank will charge them for that.  It depends on the bank but it will be something like £12 - £25.  But if both parties agree to cover the charges then it is certainly an option.

Have bought a van privately without any problems using cash - can't say as I blamed the bloke who was selling for insisting on cash with all the forged bankers drafts floating about. 

I did the check with CRIS and all was well, checked for damp and got a good deal. 

When I was selling a car privately, the buyer asked to pay by bankers draft.  I was dubious so we both trotted off to my local branch of Lloyds (only 10 mins away), explained the position and a simple phone call later, the bank was able to verify the draft as genuine - EASY. 

As for BACS transfers, don't the banks charge for these as well?  The transfers are not immediate and it can take several hours for the money to pass from one account to another. In the meantime, van gone and no money in your pocket?!!

thank you all although i am not GailV i am at the moment thinking of buying a caravan privately and it has made me think alot.  We are planning to go and see a caravan that is in storage about 45mins drive from their home address.  I will be asking a lot of questions before i part with my money.

 I just sold a caravan through advertising on the web and guy who viewed caravan wanted to pay by bankers draft, but i was worried in case i got a forged bankers draft and wanted to show draft to my bank before I let caravan go. Buyer did not have the time to wait for me to go to the bank (caravan had to go to Southampton Docks that day). So i settled on buyer paying cash and I counting notes in front of him and then released caravan.

 On a side note I got full uk forecourt price for my caravan and £100 over (which made me happy ) from what turned out to be a  english caravan dealer who exports caravans to New Zealand . Caravan as I type is being shipped out to New Zealand (takes 6 weeks, 2 caravans to a container) to another Lunar New Zealand Dealer there who sells new and used Lunars. The guy said over in New Zealand they like UK caravans. Amazingly the final price a New Zealand customer will pay for my caravan after the amount i was paid for 12 year old van, the cut of UK exporter , the shipping cost and the then the New Zealand dealers cut. I remember a New Zealand guy who posted here in past (3 or 4 months back) who has a uk caravan and was asking for advice on repairs.
