What gets me about eBay is that the person sometimes professes to be a private seller but has dozens of positive feedback.  In my mind that is trading as a businesses and they should be shopped as they are obviously dodging taxes.  excuse the pun.

Having said that, I have bought a few things (3 items) recently which were mostly under £50 off eBay.  One of the items works, but has been manufactured so poorly it must come from a East European country although it is a well known house hold brand. If it was from a retailer I would have dumped it on their doorstep ages ago.  Another item was a charger for my laptop.  I would have been better off going into PC World and paying their horrendous prices, almost double, but at least I would have had some comeback.

No problem with the third item, a sky receiver.  Goes to show that there appears to be more bad than good.

I do agree about saying they are Private with dozens of feedback, I have accounts to submit and all the usual business fees also its hard when you see them selling something you know has to be stolen because its less than half what you pay from your suppliers, Too many back of lorry jobs and eBay has no real control.

As a bona fide trader on eBay, you are in a better position than most to observe what may, or may not, be genuine trading.  Therefore, your comments above, especially the part that I have highlighted, more than support my reasons why I will not deal on eBay.

Bertie.

I DO agree but this happens in Markets, Classified Adds also normal shops, We just carry on! be honest about what we sell, If you look you will find these eBayers, ( there are lots) WE OURSELVES can't do anything about the ones like in my piece highlighted by your self so do we get tarred with the same brush!! Just because we sell on eBay, I have 3500 good and honest feedback. and do work hard with my clients to give a good, honest service just the same as when clients visit my shop.

Absolutely correct, Carol.  The advantage, for me, is that first hand contact with the seller at the outset allows the opportunity to assess his/her trustworthiness before any bidding or offer is made.

Again, for me, pursuing any complaints via eBay appears to be too difficult, and success therefore less likely.  Others have made postings in similar vein.

I sympathise with the good, honest dealers on eBay, but I am afraid they will never obtain my custom through that channel.

Bertie.
