There could be an element of the insurance company being fearful of a claim following the van being confiscated by customs. I would think 150kg of tobacco in the van would also cause concern regarding overloading too.
I just looked through the small print on a number of internet insurance sites. Most make no mention of criminal convictions in the forms, but the small print in the policy wording mentions it, so it is probably worth asking the insurer, even if they don't ask you.

couldnt overload i had 38tonne truck...just unlucky
I wasnt asked that question Thank goodness when I went to get my insurance for the van I used caravan guard no problems no questions apart from attaining to the van?
