£500 is a hell of a lot of money to store a van.

Cheapest i've found near me is now £300 and i think this is too expensive.

It is starting to get a bit pricey these days and you can easily spend £500+ on just the cost of having a van each year and thats before you go away and the site fees.

araggedtiger ..I agree, but this our first van and it cost us 15k,we are finding our feet as we are new to caravaning.

Around this area for the cover we need for 'away from home storage' is the price thats to be paid..

Under cover was a option we had to have.. :D

Damn right it is and although I've got room to store it home and know that I can without any repercussions, I just don't fancy keeping it at the front of the house for all and sundry to see when we're away.

My fixed costs are nudging a £1000 a year for storage, insurance and servicing. When you factor in the costs of holidays - especially foreign ones - this can easily threaten to break the two grand mark. This basically for four weeks holiday a year - my wife still works and her lovely bosses grudgingly allow her four weeks annual leave.

I'm fast reaching the conclusion that this is no longer a cost effective way of holidaying.

Apart from all that though, with the passing of the years, I find caravan holidays more and more like bloody hard work and this is a lot of money for the privilege of it.

These are my thought too Vic.

As i mentioned in my previous thread 'how often do you get away'

We gave up last year due to health reasons, things are alot better now and we were considering starting up again.

But, after working out how much time we will manage away with work, footy and the financial side of it, i don't think we will be bothering.

We enjoy the odd times we are away but it just seems to be getting so expensive, like you say nearly 2k a year, that is a hell of a lot of money plus the added fuel costs.

Also i must admit i do like to be waited on on my hols and the extra comfort of a nice roomy hotel, not queuing for a shower.

You and I are DEFINITELY on the same wavelength my friend.

I find the expense particularly punitive as I am retired and live on a pension. This is no sob story. With the site operators wanting bigger and bigger deposits and then wanting the balance not weeks but MONTHS in advance, the whole caravan concept has lost its spontaneity and in turn I have lost my appetite for it.

Trouble is we have a lovely caravan which we've had from new, it's all paid for and my fear is that if we got rid of it and then realised we had made a mistake, we would never get back into caravaning at the level we are currently at.

Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place.

Here in North Devon I am paying £10 p/w yes thats £520 per year. It is close to home, CCTV owner lives on site, no access to water/electricity. Can access van 24/7 But most places in this area are so bloody expensive looks like ill be staying there, unless I can knock down a carpark wall outside my house :-)
