I gave up on Practical Caravan magazine when they ran a "test" on screwdrivers - Unless you are a professional mechanic using one every day it's not going to make much of a difference wether you buy a 50p one or an expensive snap on! I felt you were really scraping the barrel on that one.

.. As I'm sure you all realise, the downside of the magazine being so successful is that everyone wants to advertise in it.                                                                           Dear sir, that’s not quiet true I don’t advertise in your title and still have the best selling Caravan Cleaning products in the UK.  This is despite the dirty tricks brigade and companies with far more clout than ours. We have had many requests from your experts for free cleaner etc. so that they can evaluate and test them. I’ve had to declined their offer and asked them to go and buy the product off the shelf locally, so they would know that the product was genuine and not a ringer and get back to me with the results good or bad----- no chance   Regards    OMF

For God's sake, here we go again.

We used to buy PC all the time untill a few years ago when we were at Blue Dolphin at Filey and Picked our pitch so we were near wc's and showers as my wife and daughter are disabled end of first week and they closed toilets and showers down where we were and expected us to trail up to the top fields and also quite a few others who were in wheelchairs etc  this was due to fact PC had a rally there in 2nd week of our hols they also reserved pitches for them but anybody else is told you cant reserve a pitch its pot luck on arrival after much arguing with BD management toilets were re-opened needless to say Blue Dolphin and PC are no longer part of our caravanning life anymore, if they want to do a review just book as a normal person and see it as a true camper without all the special conditions made for them so they can give readers a true report or do they get rewarded somehow if a good review is given.

I must admit I have read the mag  a few times and have found it interesting but when it came to renovating my 1985 swift corvette from front to back I found this site wasa the place to get the help and info needed to do the job for a fraction of the price of a workshop.

maybe Nigel could get in touch with the fixed it club members on here and run an article on their renovation projects on a DIY section of the mag. I for one would give permission ,

as for the sdverts in mags , well I read quite a few mags and find that they all have many adverts in them and yes I think they all have too many  adds but I guess thats how they keep their prices down.

My Problem is with all Magazines, including the two big clubs, any of us who keep up to date on caravans etc will know of the huge amount of problems two of the big caravan companies have had and to a lesser degree a few others with front end stress fractures of the moulded fronts but the very mags meant to inform joe public give it hardly a mention especially angry with the club mags as they are supposed to be run by members for members. Perhaps their all frightened of loosing their advertising income

Hi Romany, sorry to jump in i hope you will forgive me,  but some of the members don't realise the amount of influence these so called experts have on our lives and the censorship that goes on, anyway it's the first time a real editor from a popular title has stuck his head out------cheers Roger

I have e-mailed several caravan magazines editions including PC to ask for info for my website on Thomson Caravans, to date the only person to reply wsas Andrew Jenkinson through his own site. The magazines have to date not replied which I find as a caravanner extremly unacceptable.
I agree with Alsparker in that if you want to know something then this is the best place to ask as you are assured to get reply's from people like yourself who have an interest in caravans, motorhomes, camping and TT/FC.

With several years under its belt and a lot of members who have first hand experience of sites etc then the personal reviews and help given is always second to non.

I also have found many of the test caravans etc that magazines use seem to be of a higher standard than the ones I see at caravan centres and at shows.

Re testing of products and the lack of information etc. Why should the magazines not buy these products to test them. Toger has a point when he said about the off the shelf product giving the greatest test as it can be assured that it is exactly what the customers will eventually purchase to try for themselves.

As Romany says "Perhaps their all frightened of loosing their advertising income
" Funnily enough I have thought this for a very long time.

I no longer subscribe to any Caravan or motorhome, camping magazines as I much prefer to buy the owns in the shop as at least then I can choose if I want a particular issue or not.

Like others have said I have found that there seems to be a lot more space given to advertising in all magazines these days, there may be the same number of company adverts each year but it appears that some now have three or four pages were once they had a small add or a full page.

Must admit it is good ,yet again, to see a company coming on to ukcampsite.co.uk to join in and give answers to us personally. Well done Nigel for replying to previous posters and a very warm welcome to our favourite place, ukcampsite.co.uk

Nigel,

Just out of interest, if you got rid of every advertiser and produced PC without any adverts - a much smaller magazine obviously - As a realistic estimate How much do you think it would it cost on the newsagents shelf?

I'm new to caravanning but have ben stealing my In-laws' copy for a couple of years now!

I find it really helpful and interesting - I too would like articles on the 'basics' like fitting spotlights, getting good TV reception, cleaning water systems etc etc as well as ideas on where to go for breaks.

What's more, I like the ads!!!  I find them useful, they give me ideas for campsites, services, covers, equipment - you name it, it's advertised in PC! I find the mix to be OK and now I have just bought my first van I may buy my own copies from now on!!!

would be nice to have features from ordinary folk on their van, preferably older vans as some of the classics are nice and have a bit of character even up to the late 80's vans
