Swift -

Other posts seem to have covered the point I was going to test. I have not got very far as I am using and "old" Arcon Sweety dish which from what I could find out may or may not work with a digital receiver as it doesn't have a universal LNB. Can get a signat strength but no signal quality or lock. It may be I have to change the LNB settings but I have lost the manual for the sweetly and can't find anything on the web so will probably give up and by a new dish!

regards

Tony

Thanks, Ronnie, I have Sky Sports, so that explains it

The maplins dish is only 30cms, so does that make it more difficult to locate the signal?

Generally, the smaller the dish, the more precise you have to be setting up ! So if your inexperienced, it may take yonks. Which is what we read time and time again with the Comaq set up.

That said, The Arcon Sweety that tony has is small but has a very good LNB, which once mastered, will be much better than a Sky Minidish.

Ronnie -

Do you know if my Sweety will work, I bought it about 12 years ago and used it with an analogue box, I have lost the manual, any idea of the LNB settings I should use on my Sky Digibox?

thanks

Tony

Sorry to disagree Ronnie its definitely easier to line up a smaller dish but you need a bigger dish as the signal gets weaker

The smaller the dish the more tolerant it is of the angle it is receiving the satellite

A bigger dish needs to be aimed exactly

A guy in France last month was receiving Astra1 and Astra 2 at the same setting on his Macro mini dish and I am sure of this as I set it up for him

He later told me that he was getting Hotbird as well on the same setting

Amazing

Tony you don't need to set the LNB on the digi box

If its fitted with a universal LNB then the Sweety dish will find the satellite if pointed in the right direction!!

I stopped using the Sweety type of dish because the LNB are not so readily available as the ones used on a fixed arm dish like the Sky mini dish

I had 3 fail so switched to the Maxview dish which can also be fitted with a quad/twin LNB for Sky+ as can the Sky mini dish

OK John I'll agree to disagree. I get 100% Signal quality easily and quickly when I use a zone 2 dish in the UK. OK I concede I know what I'm doing and have done it for years !

Tony, soz but without proper 'hands on' it's difficult to advise accordingly ! But, if you give up, a Sky minidish (with LNB) will only knock you back about £10 plus P&P

Thanks Ronnie, I've been looking on eBay to see what prices are like.

I paid £35ish of Ebay for 60cm Dish, LNB, Cables and Tripod came day after.  Took me an hour or so to put dish together and 5 mins to get sky picture using a £3 sat finder.

Dish now packed away ready for first trip. Anticipate it should take no more than 10 mins to set up.

That's a good price with a tripod !

I knock out 60cm dishes, when I'm on rallies and meets for £15 (or £17.50 built) with LNB

Most dishes have fixed LNB arms. Just buy some wing nuts and replace them - I then just unscrew the arm when travelling. Mine goes intot he top box, the box in the van. Easy.

Ronnie have you tried with an 80cm or above dish?

The top of the dish is about 1in over the vertical so it seems to be pointing at the ground and I've met several people who have given up trying to find the satellite because it just doesn't look right

My friend even bought a new LNB etc, etc

Have a look here for info

http://www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk/

Click on

"Click here ifyou are using a Sky digibox"

Then

2. What equipment and read the green box

Regards
