I think I have problems with my brake lights; I put my foot on the brake but by the time I get out and go round the back they're out.

You aint quick enough then, have to be a bit quicker.

Just wanted to remind everyone to check their lights. I spotted 5 vehicles on my way home with either a head light or side light out (some had more than one out too.) And that's without even checking indicators, fog lights etc..

This Is Why I Bought A Volvo

The Lights Are On All The Tine !

The whole point is that not everyone has an indicator that a bulb has blown and of those that do, some people don't seem to bother changing the bulb as there are a lot of cars on the road with faulty lights. You also see a lot with other faults, ie side lights flashing with indicators and such which are usually caused by earth faults rather than bulbs. None of this accounts for people just forgetting to turn them on either.

For fun, why not do a count on your way home from work how many people you can see with no lights or faulty lights tomorrow. You might be amazed at how many are there, especially if you count bikes too.

so people have bulbs on the dash that tells them when a bulb has blown - and a lot of other stuff too like low oil level.

What happens if that little bulb on the dash blows!

Theres nothing like going round and checking. and under bonnet levels too

There are probably a fair few that don't know what that funny light is on for on the dash anyway. I know someone who drove round for a few days with no oil in his engine because he didn't know what the oil pressure light was. INcidentally the oil pressure light is different from the oil level light in as much as once the oil pressure light comes on it is effectively telling you "too late to top your oil up" not that you need to top up.

All the lights in the world on your dash are no substitute for a brain telling you it is dark; I must turn my lights on. Sadly a fair few seem to lack this amount of intelligence. Last year they put messages on the matrix signs on my way home from work advising people it was dark, use your lights. My sound like big brother thinks you are stupid, but people still had their lights off.

thought checking the lights was part of the fortnightly/300 miles (whatever comes 1st) checks that every sensible motorist does along with tyre pressures, oil, water, wiper blades. or am i the only guy that does that. with the van every time the thing is tied on the lights get checked and before every trip the tyre pressures, torque and condition as well as a shedload of other things

I do check the lights on the van when I hitch up as I never trusted trailer electrics. I check the oil and water regularly when I change my car but if I find it never drops then I tend not to check it as often after a while, same with tyre pressures. I checked my tyre pressures earlier in the week and they were still exactly where I set them 6 months ago. As regards the lights, I live at the end of the road so when I reverse up the road every day after work, I can see the reflection of my brake and side lights on the wall and see the front lights in the morning on the car in front when I pull off so a theoretical check is done daily in my case through the winter. Not so thorough in the summer though.

My checks are more a coincidental check than planned. Judging by the number of faulty lights on the road, I don't think many people do take the time to check their lights or for that matter tyres, oil, coolants etc.

It defies belief the state of disrepair some cars are in. I took my bosses car out a few weeks ago, to find his wiper blades were almost non existent. I used to be a motor mechanic and some of the vehicles we had in for servicing were in a terrible state. We had a Mini come in once for a service that had no brakes. We repaired the brakes and the owner thought there was something wrong with it because they worked.

A work colleague said the other day that "apparently you're supposed to check the water in the radiator and the oil level - how do you do that?" I could just about understand that from a kid, but he's 35-years-old and a university graduate! He's been driving for years! Still, you live and learn. He's just discovered that cars are supposed to be serviced, too.

A friend of ours was a mathematical genius or so he said and worked for ICI etc

Certainly you couldn't beat him at adding up darts scores

He had new to him car and on driving home noticed an odd noise so decided to look under the bonnet when he got home 10 miles later

After 5 miles the car started to fill up with smoke and he stopped and looking under the bonnet saw flames(starter motor was stuck)

That evening's bottle of wine was then used to put out the fire

He phoned a friend for a tow

Friend arrived in one car and wife in another so that she could follow with 4 flashers going to warn traffic

What puzzled her as she followed was his frequent attempts to overtake the towing vehicle

It became apparent when a stop was enforced that he still had the steering lock on17

There must be a moral to the tale somewhwere
