A dealer near us (Coleford Leisure), has 3 Avondales for sale.

'98 Mayfly for £500, '90 Mayfly for £400, and a '90 Cambrian for £400. I've no idea what condition they are in.

WHY did I pay £4000 insurance.

Insurance cover cost £4000??????????

Surely that is more than the van is worth. Something wrong here!!!!!!!!

No 2kias, they have it insured for £4k, the premiums weren't £4k!

Ali

Ah! That's not what he said!!!!!

Nope but you do, of course, have to read between the lines sometimes and nobody would ever pay £4,000 to insure a 10 year old caravan!  It was therefore obvious that he meant the sum assured was £4k, not the premium!

We all have a different command of the English language John.  Anyhow, what is important is that he gets a decent deal from his insurance as, after all, it is not his fault Avondale have gone teeeeees up!!

Although insurers will ask you the value of the 'van they will only pay out what they decide the 'van is worth, so saying you insured for a certain value is meaningless.

The exeption is agreed value insurance, they do this for classic cars but I dunno if you can do it for caravans. You have to supply photos, an engineers report & your annual mileage is limited.

I also think that when vans are over 10yrs old then it's your word against theirs for the value of it so don't accept what they say as gospel, I know that people don't like to haggle but sometimes you just have to.

The van is a leda pennine XL. I am NOT a HE by the way(look at my pictures!! LOL) It is a top spec van for the year, 5 berth double dinette!! The insurers have been back on today and offered us an extra grand which is better but Im gonna have to put another grand towards for one of the same quality. saw one on caravan finder ( i think!! on a private sale) for £3,900 I think it was or one 2 year younger for £5,500 on a private sale. Im still losing out whatever. You come on here for sympathy and empathy and have the snotty patronising few making out you are thick!! I am 35 year old am on my 4th caravan and been vanning since I was 24. Yeah you can get a new van for around 10k or 20k depending on the spec. I looked for the average value of my van and insured accordingly. Cheers!

Blondieandi - please don't take it personally.  Some people just seem to like to 'pick holes' in postings and rather than answer the original question just make snide comments.  I think almost everyone will have had it happen to them.   You've also had some good advice as well from others of a more reasonable nature!

I still think you could get the van repaired - especially with the extra grand.  I'd spend a little time ringing around and searching the internet for the parts you need, and then go back to your local guy to get a decent quote for the repairs.  At this point you start haggling with the insurance company.  The first website mentioned seemed to have a shower tray with a moulding for the wheel arch - did you try them?

I know ive had some great advice off some kind folk (BIG THANKS), some people just get on your t**s!! The insurers said they may now take the van as they have decided to write it off Im waiting for the letter off them to see what they have actually put in writing as if i can keep it I lose the CRIS number have to get it repaired, get an engineer to say its roadworthy and then can get another CRIS number which costs around £500.Ill have to see what the terms actually are and decide what to do. If i keep it I could just forget the cris number and not insure it as its virtually worthless anyway and run it into the ground.

Firstly I hope you do not think I was having a dig at you, I was actually trying to defend you!

Secondly, £500 is an awful lot for a CRIS number so I would say that is a no brainer tbh, but if they make you a decent offer take the money and start again.

In otherwise good condition, a dealer today would be looking to get  £3500 for your van, in May this year it might well have been worth £3900 or more but there is a credit crunch on!!

Insurance 'write offs' come in different category's, 'a' is matchwood, 'b' for bad but repairable, you would lose the CRIS number and it needs an engineers report 'of sorts' before it can be re-insured. 'c' & 'd' are different grades of basically cosmetic damage and need no more than an invoice proving the works been done for insurance purposes.

'a' then never goes back on the road, infact their destroyed, 'b' are often broken for spares but probably as many, certainly younger ones are repaired. 'a' & 'b' then have a fairly rigid and low residual value, the other two can vary widely depending on actual damage and your negotiating skills!

Insurance companies vary, generally over £1500 30% of value for you to keep a C or D without a minor accident being recorded on the CRIS document, 20% if recorded

If yours turns out to be a 'B' then probably 10% to keep it.

Lol some years go like that, ours was 2005 when everything that could go wrong, did!  Hope OH gets better soon, having your van written off must be a right pain in the neck especially with the Avondale issues too.
