We have a Defender and the ruts do annoy me- pulling the Landy from side to side. No problems any other time.

can any one verify if there is a similar issue with motorways in Europe or is it this government cost cutting again.
I wonder if there are any statistics on accidents casued by these ruts in the motorways?

It would seem to be overweight lorries that are causing these ruts and as usual, nothing is done about it.  In my view, they are so bad on some stretches of motorway, it's dangerous, especially if you are not expecting it and have a 20 foot caravan on the back!!!

We had terrible trouble with the ruts when we had an Omega Estate as our towcar. Now got a Grand Cherokee and never once had a problem with them and we've had it nearly a year and towed quite a few times.

Done tens of thousands of miles across Europe and never noticed ruts like we get in the UK !!!

I don't have any probs with my Navara 4x4 towing along the ruts . .  I can feel them a bit, but it doesn't send me all over the road.

I hear of a lot of Disco owners with problems towing so don't know that they are the best to tug in the world.

Do 4x4 owners realise you should NOT use it in 4x4 when driving on roads? It should be in 2WD mode for normal road driving. Having 4WD is not the same as your vehicle being AWD. All Wheel Drive vehicles are those that are permanent 4x4. If you drive a Disco and other 4x4's then only use 4x4 on the loose/slippy stuff (which doesn't include rain)

Why make such sweeping statements and have a go at Land Rovers and 4 x 4 s when its obvious you dont know what you are talking about. Most discos including ours are permanent 4 wheel drive and do not have a 2 wheel drive option.

I hope this clarifies this point

Yes the Disco is permanant 4 wheel drive. However charlichoo may have stumbled on something here. I had no problems with my Shogun which I always used in 2WD and obviously have no option but to use 4WD in the Discovery. Could well be the difference & problem?

I don't tow a caravan but just driving my Zafira on motorways I can get stuck in the ruts which can pull the steering. The roads in this country are appalling - if it isn't ruts on the motorways it is pot holes on the local roads. We have low profile alloy wheels.

Have driven extensively in France, Italy, Switzerland and Spain and have never come across ruts on their motorways. Infact in France we always comment how good their road surfaces are.

They may have a valid point about permanent 4 wheel drive and ruts in the road so don't knock it to quick. Normally I use mine in 2Wd with no problem.
Not being an expert, I would think that any front wheel drive car on hitting ruts would have an immediate effect on the steering and stablity of the vehicle as that is where the actual drive is whereas a rear wheel drive vehilce woudl not feel the impact as much. Just a thought!

Not wanting to upset your theory Surfer01, i have noticed this rut problem in 7.5 tonne trucks and transit vans which are rear wheel drive. I have also noticed the ruts pulling my caravan about a bit when towing with either a fwd car or 4x4s both big and small(outfit doesn't actually become unstable but is a bit un-nerving a little like a sudden gust of wind or a nasty undulation in the road). My (probably totally wrong lol) theory is if the vehicle or trailer wheel track, or width between the wheels from side to side, is just a little more narrow than the actual ruts, then the wheels tend to 'drop' into one rut, and then into the other, causing the nasty weave feeling. If the wheel track is smaller, the unit will happily sit in one rut, or bigger and it will settle in both ruts. But whatever makes your outfit be affected by it, it is not a nice driving experience

Agree on that as we nearly lost a car and a caravan near junction 13 on the M5. At the time I was towing a single axle caravan with a S80 which is a heavy car. I had just overtaken an artic I was moving back into the nearside lane at about 55mph when suddenly without any warning the car and the caravan started snaking all over the road. Gave us a hell of a fright.
On going down the same route a few weeks later I noticed the ruts and they were probably at least 6 inches deep so i assume thsi is what caused our oputfit to snake.
