Surely tacho's are meant to improve safety. How can something that is so inflexible, so stress-inducing, possibly improve safety? You say they are now a digital tachometer - unfortunately it's an analogue world...

If they read the tacho on a truck and you have been speeding you can be fined - never mind the speed cameras.

Mike.

well actually they cannot do you for speeding off a tacho as you can claim a defect, they have to catch you in the act just the same as everybody elso, what we do get is an infringement sheet from the fta which we have to sign and that shows up as an overspeed, yes big brother is always watching us.

I have found this thread quite amusing. It all started with a caravaner criticising a trucker for obeying the speed limit (Hum) Then later he admitted that he did not know the speed limit, words usually preceded by ”Sorry Officer”. Let’s look at a few facts
Average caravaner Towing      about 2000 miles a year
Average trucker Towing ( Artic or drag) about 1000 miles per week.
Now I am relatively new to caravan towing I only started in 1980, and am on my seventh van.
So I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the truckers who over the years have shown great consideration for us amateurs. I know some of you are caravaners, (hence the reason for being on this forum) and it shows. You are doing a great job in very difficult times.
There is an old Indian saying “Never criticise a man till you have walked a mile in his shoes”
By the way when I passed my HGV the speed limit was 20 mph for HGVs (Yes and I still have a clean license)
Come on Guy’s live and let live.
