I know that this is changing the thread a little but I personally think that this is very wrong. I know someone who is english. He speaks fluent french and german. He has a german registered caravan (far too wide for our roads on his own admission) He insures it in Germany and brings it over to the UK reguarly. On the rare occassion that he has been stopped he then chooses to only speak German! Guess what..? He has never been booked! Think about it.. the average British traffic cop probably can't speak German. Is it worth his while to call out an interpretor? form filling etc etc just because the caravan is over sized and in any case may well never see him again?!
Us english are stupid! If we break the law in France or wherever it doesn't matter whether we understand or not we are dragged down to the cash machine and dealt with! Thats after we have paid for the privelage of paying all their road tolls- yet they come here for free! Oh no- thats another argument- for my point again- totally wrong!
i agree we are to soft along the same lines as your freind i no a few drivers who take there new trucks to holland register them there and then come home never to pay road tax its wrong i no but what can we do

Totally agree, we should have vignettes here too. The other issues can only be resolved by the Dept of Transport, Police etc and they are so thin on the ground I can't see that happening any time soon.
I guess that must be the argument- either we do away with road tax or charge for use of our roads too! At the moment we seem to be losing out all ways on! Adopt the french system? It may keep some mindless idiots of our roads too?!
Yep but we could save a fortune on not having to have all speed cameras etc everywhere- do what the french do- wait for them at the next peage! Any vehicles over sized etc- impound! Simple!

Actually he has to be resident in Germany to register his caravan there. Under European rules it is perfectly legal to use your car/caravan that is legally registered in your country of residence in any other European country.
Having said this I would not venture to travel the UK with anything wider than 2.3 meters and I do not understand people who do. Many roads are difficult enough as it is. My Hobby is 2.3 m and I have the impression many HGV-drivers make a point of passing me extra-close.
well on behalf of my fellow truckers i must apologise as i no a lot do pass as close as they can to shake you up as a fellow caravaner i always give caravans a wide berth

You are perfectly right- the caravan is registered in his brothers name who does live in Germany. Its all done to basically flount the British Law! I believe that the caravan in question is 2.5m in width or even more-its huge!

Would he not have to be towing with a German registered car too?

He would. If he is a UK resident he is not allowed to use a foreign-registry car/caravan within the UK, as far as I know. Or does he take his German brother with him all the time? But at least he is paying German road tax and has to have his caravan mot'd every other year.
I cannot see how 6 inches is going to make a hell of a difference to towing a trailer like a caravan. A lot of vehicles under 3500kg are wider than 7' 6".
Has anybody thought to contact Hobby caravans and ask them their interpretation of the law in the UK? I would like to believe it would be against the EU and UK law for them to sell a caravan for use in the UK that cannot be used lawfully. If this is the case, Hobby should surely be able to tell us as consumers what minimum 'plated' weight/width vehicle is needed to legally tow which caravan in their range. EG - do you need a 3501kg+ vehicle to tow a 8ft wide caravan or not? If they do not want to tell us then maybe there is a problem with the UK law..... Another interesting thing to me is how can it be legal in the EU to tow one with a non-commercial vehicle when we are part of the EU and it is possibly illegal here? If our roads are not up to the EU standards does that mean our road construction specs do not conform to EU rules? Are all the roads in Europe wider than ours (including the routes through the mountains, for example), or is it the usual case of the UK civil servants giving us all a hard time for fun? My thoughts are not meant to be 'extreme' in any way, but hopefully thought provoking
