Nah not really bad cus you can always buy it back off eBay!!

Seriously though it is not so much the theft of caravans that is the problem, it is the thought of your caravan being stolen. Stolen caravans are just like every other crime story in this country, the media seizes on it and amplifies it until people start running around like headless chickens worrying about it.

Having said that it does happen sometimes so taking precautions is wise - probably the best might be having adequate insurance

We never leave ours either.  Even to let the dogs stretch their legs we stay close to the van.  We eat lunch in the car & tae turns to go to the loo.  Suppose that's difficult if you're on your own but as Michael says, use the loo in the van rather than leave it.  Having said that, I'd also make a lot of noise about going into the van - wouldn't want someone thinking it was unattended & driving off with it with me in the loo!
Yup never leave it alone take turns. I now find myself alone and so use the caravan loo. I must admit the thought did cross my mind about the caravan being nicked while I am in there. Spooky thought.
Not a nice idea at all
Look on the bright side as long as you have a mobile phone with you, you can call 999 and give them a running commentary of where you are,and whats happening, and catch them red handed."caught with your pants down" be a whole different meaning. mind you, boys in blue may think its a wind up. thats what you could call a thrilling adventure packed caravan trip, dont know where im going till i get there.

We don't stop on motorway service areas ever. Won't pay the prices and I hate eating in a slum which is what most of them are. We pull off and find a layby somewhere and use the caravan facilities. That's what it is for.

If vans are stolen then the owner only has themselves to blame.

Caravan theft has halved since the police arrested the two families who were responsible for most of it.

Abroad is no worse, or better than UK. Except most French and Spanish services have nice grass areas right next to where you park with benches, trees, flowers and waste bins.
Best idea is to pretend your all going in to the services but really leave the two hulking teens inside the van with a couple of bits of 4 x 2 to help the thieving scum should they decide to add a new van to their collection.

Be fair, quite a few (but by no means most) of British services have this. There's one I know in Scotland that has views of a lake, with a fountain!

I can honestly say that I've never found one yet in the UK

If you put an Alko wheel lock on and a hitchlock plus an alarm would theives still get it? Especially if you leave it at Frankley in full view of the HGVs.

Who is going to step in and prevent a group of itinerant males taking a caravan?

We pulled into a newish services on the A1 on our way north last November, and parked next to an identical van to ours. Absolutely no security in place, nobody with it.

We sat in our van and had lunch. About 30 minutes later the owners turned up, gave us a wave and drove off. They had not even had the alarm turned on, £18k of van totally unsecured!

And therefore, probably totally uninsured. Most insurers insist on named security devices being fitted whenever the van is left unattended.

It's just ignorance! Like not wearing a seatbelt or using your phone whilst driving, or stopping on double yellows to pop to the shop!

People don't think!
