We also have friends who look down their noses at our caravan - but I just grin and ask how their 2 weeks in a Greek apartment compares to our 61 nights away last year - we were even away at New Year when they were sat at home around the fire.

THE CALENDAR,,,, LUXURY CARAVAN CALENDAR 2010

,for everyone who might be interested is from the Transglobal Emporium, the telephone number on the back of the calendar is 01223 316206 or www.transglobal-emporium.com its really funny, it has handy hints and tips on each page too, like July; count jigsaw pieces before starting, sept; reverse up to shop window to check your lights, Nov; remove van from drive due to fireworks

.This is what it says on the front:

"For the daring holiday goer, with its cantankerous cupboards, short fused shower unit, the beleaguered tourist may well seek solace in the chemical toilet,,,,beware the creature from the black lagoon ,,,,never the same after an angry onboard bank holiday blow back incident "

I definately have your problem, none of my work colleagues are caravanners or tenters, nor my friends my own age. Being the grand old age of 21 and starting towing at 17 I have always been very much the outsider of the group. Still have never looked back and have met some good friends out on site and even celebrated my 21st on site (they decorated my caravan up whilst I had nipped back to work and did a surprise party). And my thoughts are what a fantastic hobby we all have, Absolutely fabulous,

None of our friends camp - they just smile sympathetically when I talk about it.  Even my grown up kids yawn if I mention it.

They don't know what they're missing out on, the freedom &  relaxing in the fresh air (essential if a person works where my husband works)

I would like to camp with friends, so we're hopefully going on some DA meets and also got a UKCS meet lined up (Gundrys farm).  But even on our own we always make friends with our camping neighbours, even if we dont meet them again its a pleasure to have met them

I am lucky, the girls at work all love the idea of camping even thought hey dont do it. I have an excelent group of friends with children who all camp and we all have several weekends as groups a year. I have another few friends who dont have kids and they just accept we all "do" different holidays.

My sister on the other hand thinks I am mad and cant contemplate the whole thing. Her hubby and son love to come and she says she will stay in a b abd b nearby. That said she spends more in one week in a cottage than we do for 2 weeks on site and she has an only child to amuse 24/7 which usually ends in her being more stressed. Dont have that trouble on site, I can usually gurantee within the first day my girls have made some friends and I have had a cuppa with another mum.  Spare me the airports/ferries/ using other peoples plates etc in a cottage and give me my van anyday.

love this thread. Our caravan has been our sanity. Working from our home office means we are never away from the business or phone, but since we bought our van we schedule a few nights away every 3 wks. We only go to sites within 45mins drive away (as we're oncall), but as we live in the lake District that's not a problem. We love leaving all the technology and our teenagers behind, taking our 2 younger kids with us. They both love getting outdoors, having Mum & Dad all to themselves, the adventure of it all, and making friends onsite within a few minutes usually. I often think of my caravan as my shell, as in a snail!!

We picked up our new to us Bailey Montana on Thursday and within hours our dd was sat in her pj's watching a film in it whilst its on the driveway, there were tears when it was time to come in and go to bed. Now we have to wait until the 27th to get 3 nights away and it's killing me, we've not been away since November and I'm going insane for my 'van' fix.

Our friends (most of them anyway) think we're bonkers and just can't see what there is to enjoy about it, despite our explanations. But tbh we're so addicted we couldn't care less. We always make friends onsite with likeminded people. We like many others get away far more in our van than we would if we didn't have one.

I work in an office and on one particular occasion one of my colleagues asked where I was going on my holidays I replied with my destination, On this one particular occasion It was Sun Valley holiday park near Pentewan sands in Cornwall and the relpy was
"ahh right,,Oh well at least It's a holiday"
Now everytime we're about to go away whether for a weekend or a longer period I always ask my colleagues where they're going and most respond with,"errm we're going abroad somewhere, It depends on what cancellation we can get"
Of course I have to follow it up with " Is it just the one holiday that you have?"
"Loving it"

'I have a colleague who thinks she is a bit posh who once announced - a caravan!  I've never met anyone who actually owned a caravan!  How quaint.'

Sounds like my stuck up sister-in-law.Travels to exotic places at least three times a year and thinks she is better than anybody else on our side of the family. She's from Essex and we are from that common place up north and talk with a common accent.

Well I wouldn't swap places with her for all the tea in China(she's been three times there!!). I love the beauty of our British Isles and our caravan enables us to visit places we have never been to before.I know where I would rather be.

I've many friends who don't understand our love of our caravan holidays. One of them looks forward to going to Egypt every year yet comes back complaining about the heat. many of them don't understand me when I tell them I prefer sleeping in my own bed, eating from my own plate & drinking from my own cup. I don't want to sit in an airport for hours, fly off to places where it's often too hot, I can't understand the language, often wouldn't be able to drink the water or eat freely without risking having to spend a lot of my holiday in the small room.

It's down to personal choice at the end of the day, having a caravan has been the only way we'd get a holiday considering we've got four children. Thankfully the kids aged 20 down to 14 still love caravan holidays as much as we do & all come with us.

The way I see it is simple, there's a lot of this country I won't live long enough to see  & I hope our friends continue to enjoy their costly foreign travel, because I don't want it.

There is something oddly English about the repsonses to 'vanning, on the one hand you get the how very common - like a gypsy brigade and on the other, how very middle-class, you must be coining it in! Weird two polar opposites, I've never heard either from our continental cousins...

All the time, but I don't care I love my Biba so does hubby, and if you don't well :p that's up to you. I'm absolutley petrified of flying not just scared I mean hyperventilates passing out on the Tarmac in front of our flight to Greece petrified , so this is ideal for me and hubby, we know some people snigger and take the pee and talk in an anorack voice to us when asking about the van ,but I tell you one thing I have noticed is that how their ears prick up when we say how many times we get to go away and we really hold their attention when we mention the bbq's and beer we enjoy in the evenings....give me my van and the open countryside and wonderful like minded people over a sweaty crammed plane/airport/hotel anyday.
And the best bit for me is I can take my dogs too
