It is my opinion, logical & correct. replying to the op saying "Oh you'll be Ok..etc..blah" is as much use as saying "Cheer up it'll never happen"..It was clear from the op that he was using the wrong driving technique. This lack of knowledge was ruining his caravanning experience. If he follows my detailed instructions then he will have no more trouble & he will be back enjoying his caravanning.

We had a Rover 75 a few years ago before the Maverick and hubby would have one again like a shot as he loves them but even he has to admit that uphill the Rover couldn't hack it.

You could hear the sounds of 'tut tut' B****y caravans.

I know on paper your rover looks o.k but maybe a heavier 4wd is maybe the answer to give you more confidence.

All the best.

I was going to ask you to feel free to explain how you ascertained my wrong driving technique from the OP but I really couldn't care less

I ascertained it from your op because you stated you had managed to destroy your cars' clutch by towing your caravan up a hill. I explained to you how tow your caravan uphill without destroying your clutch.

I assumed this was the info you sought.

Hi Willhay555 , i tow with a Rover 75 tourer and a Swift Challanger Mtplm 1470kg , i must admit i had my doubts weather it would tow ok on hills ( although it has a tow limit of 1600kg ) , but haven't had any problems so far , i've done a few mods that have increased it's power and torque and it pulls really well . I had to do a hill start in Minehead caravan club site after stopping to book in and it managed surprising well ( it's pretty steep there, just inside the entrance ) .

The thing that might have a bearing on your problem is , Rover clutches are known to go at about 100,000 miles there abouts . Mine had a new clutch fitted just before i bought it .
Also if you found yourself slipping the clutch to pull away up the hill a good few times , doing that would have burnt the clutch out .
I think you've had some good advice on how to cope with hills , the only thing i can say where driving a rover is concerned is ( when i've been driving mine that is ) to get your foot off the clutch as soon as you get moving rather than slipping the clutch too much .
