So, if on the M5 on Friday, when I look in the mirror if there are 4 vehicles behind us, should I pull onto the hard shoulder & let them pass?
No what you must do is wait untill there is a uphill section then pull out and overtake a lorry ensuring you take as long as possible..
I've seen HGV's do this even on sections around Bristol where its been made in to 4 lanes,
There are many bad drivers out there irespepctive of what they drive be it hgv's cars scooters motorbikes buses and even towing caravans. Many seem to have a total disreguard for the law and highway code.
What is annoying is when you have someone travlling at just over 50mph in the nearside lane and when you go to overtake them they increase their speed.
I prefer to overtake LGV on hills as I can get past them quicker than on a normal flat surface.

I find the ones that crawl past you then pull in front of you and slow down to be the most annoying.
You mean like the idiot in a 4 x 4 towing a Lunar who was trying to overtake me (solo car) this morning when I was going uphill on the M40 at 65 - 70mph? I slowed down to let him past in the end as I didn't fancy being alongside him if his van went over - whereupon he pulled in so close in front of me that I was forced to brake. I will refrain from telling you what I called him!
My DOH always errs on the side of caution/lawful speed limits/lower fuel consumption and even though I sometimes wish he'd go just a little bit faster, I know its because he wants us to arrive safely in one piece with no speeding ticket and without having had to fill up too often. I remember a couple of years ago coming out of the Rouen tunnel heading towards Calais we were passed by a big 4x4 jobby pulling a huge great double axel. And then a few miles further on we passed it - in the ditch! Very disconsolate family standing round. Caused by speeding? I can't help but think so. I just think that so many people these days buy huge vans and big 4x4s and think that if they have the big strong car nothing else matters. As others have said - they don't know about nose weights and loading safely and checking tyres.
About 3 years ago my father had an accident nr junction 6 M5 whilst towing, he was driving a discovery and towing a single axle Bailey at the time, he had just overtaken another vehicle and moved back into the first lane when it started snaking, Although badly damaged and a write off the caravan remained upright however the discovery ended up on its side with the roof impaled through the crash barrier.
Again the ruts along this section where horrendous.
By the way this was is first accident in 38yrs of caravaning.
------------- Why have kids when you can have a dog?
good one today, lunur van pulled by freelander middle lane 70mph, stayed well back from him, a true nutter, passed him on up hill part of m4, guy in is thirtys family in car, it give,s caravaners a bad name, mind you i see this every day as i drive hgv,s when not out in my van.
------------- its easy enough to be pleasant when the world rolls along like a song.but a man is worth while if he can smile when every thing goes f------ wrong.
Unfortuneatley the police only have so much resources they can use and cant always be everywhere. Yes I know whats comming that they are in such an such place with a speed camera. As I have said before there are idiots out there some drive cars some tow some drive HGV'S. Prehaps if speeding fines went back to the police directly then maybe more would be seen on the roads.
Its not all about speed though. Isn't it about how you load the van?
But if more police were avaiable to patrol the A roads and Mways then prehaps some of those who havent a clue about safe loading etc would be shown the error of their ways before its too late. My wifes cousin had a van last year along with a 4x4 and went up to scotland with freinds. On the way the van broke its back dont know the details as they never did say , but it was certainly overloaded as they were carrying half of their freinds stuff in the van along with theirs.
