Page 111 here in the Swift handbook has a good explanation Surfer.
Work through it again carefully, you must, as you say, be doing something wrong. It is fiddly to set up, but once done it should be retained in the memory.
You put in the set-back time and temp, then the time to return to normal. Normal being the temp you have set on the top row. You also set it to "0" on the "day" and it does it every day the same.
I find it is better to think of the controller as a programmable thermostat rather than a timer as you cannot set it like an ordinary house CH timer.
The bottom row has several interesting features ,which are explained in the manual, but some require an additional sensor or connection to be fitted.
We have added a remote temp sensor, the battery back-up link, the overload monitoring/reducer, and the external start.
The amps to monitor are set in the bottom row, also the Legionella function, the "beep" when button pressed function, the clock settings, and the night set-back.
