Sorry to hear of the theft, we will look out for it as they are few and far between. I hope you have new for old insurance with a reputable company as I'm sure you do not want it back if it has been where most people think...

Hi

I still don't know how I feel about my caravan or if I want it back.  I seriously hope they catch the people who did this and I would hate to see 'Mini' damaged but on the other hand I hate to think of someone going through my things and I fear it would all feel tainted.  At the minute I don't even know if I want to replace it.  The problem being that after having a Hobby I feel anything else would feel inferior, we have become accustomed to having a fixed bed and fixed bunks and would hate to feel forced into a lesser van, it would feel like 'they' had won, on the other hand I am too scared to get another Hobby.  I feel they are just waiting for us to replace it so they can waltz straight on it and take it again.

I am becoming overly suspisious of everything and everyone.  The hiding place was really good.  Unless being told it was there or going and having a really good scout around you wouldn't have found it.  I worry that someone we know has passed on our info or that someone I've met at a campsite or that they're going to come back for my truck or to break into my home.  Or even that it's someone on here and they're reading all of this.

On the matter of google earth and google street view.  Our streetview picture was done a year ago and doesn't show much.  Google earth images are older and although they don't show our caravan, what they do show is a very detailed and exact layout of our home, farm, gardens, private roadways, fields and their gateways.  I think it's entirely possible it could have been used to plan access and routes as the culprits avoided the roadways past the house and my parents house and nipped through two fields.  It was clearly very organised.

Now, I'd better ring the loss adjuster back, oh joy.

x

So sorry that your pride and joy been stolen. It is an unfortunate reflection on today's society there seem to be more and more scumbags wanting something for nothing.

Hard to take when you work hard and save for the things you want. Hope it is resolved soon.

Sorry to hear about the theft of your 'mini' having experience theft of a radio from a car (although not comparable) it was not a nice feeling that someone had been in there and thinking about it I am not sure if it was my caravan if I would want it back, but I would want them caught, who ever they are.

We are with CIS for car insurance (Not caravan) and had to make a claim this year, we have been with them for years and had to make claims in the past, we have always found them very good, but this year it was frustrating as they only took calls in the day time and OH who's claim it was couldn't be in. It was all sorted quite quickly as our garage was willing to sort it with them. Apparently for car insurance we were told they no longer have their own assessors who go out which is apparently causing some people problems, don’t know how true that is.

Hope its all sorted very soon for you.

If you do replace your van with another Hobby I would recommend a tracker device...

Police told me yesterday they weren't worth the money, he said in his experience they either find them and get them off or dissabled very quickly or have a jamming device.

Reccomend that even if you happen to see it again, perhaps on a traveller's site, you don't go ask for it back.

Unless you currently own a shotgun license, are SAS trained or have a personal army of your own. I once tried to reclaim a Shogun from that situation, and would not repeat the experience. Similarly had a friend who had the bucket from his excavator nicked by them...he took the excavator to reclaim the bucket..and still had to pay a couple of grand to get it back.

Time to move on. We have a tracker on our 'van: its the best we can do...but I fancy painting our postcose on the roof in 3 ft high letters..

Sorry for you loss. Scumbags.

On our last caravan we went to a local sign makers and for about £20 they produced a 2ft x 4ft sign with our post code that was adhesive and peeled off of backing that we could stick to our caravan roof.

Isn't it dangerous to have your postcode on the roof of your caravan as it advertises your home is empty?

I'm sure in the past there has been some discussion about it.

Perhaps putting your car registration number or Cris number on would be effective for the police searching for it? Using a number applicable to the caravan on its roof it would not need changing when you move or change car, perhaps manufacturers could start to introduce this.

I would guess that you dont want to find it! I know I wouldt as I would feel that it 'dirty' and not knowing how it has been treated or what has been done.

IMHO, I would rather the insurance paid up ASAP so as new chapter in my life could start.

This is exactly how I felt, TKMAXX, when it happened to us.  Was all sorted with new van very quickly through CC Insurance.  I really hope the Farmers Wife gets it all sorted quickly.  We just felt in limbo for the period while we were awaiting the new van.

Unfortunately the make is precisely the reason that is was stolen. Our German van was in for service at a dealer and the theives cut throught the fence of the dealership to remove the van. Like the Farmer's Wife, we loved the van but the hassle of insurance, site owners with a narrow-minded attitude and the ever constant worry of theft pushed us back down the UK van route, and guess what? We enjoy our caravanning every bit as much if not more!
Insurance is cheaper, service is cheaper, no refusals from any sites, VOSA not waiting to step out of the bushes and pull us in (as much)and we go to sleep at night not worrying that the van is going to be spirited away in the night. Losing your Hobby should not be the end of your caravanning. Replace it certainly, but for the sake of a few hundred quid protect it with a tracker.

A few good points on Google Earth on here though. Our van is behind 9' high solid gates and an even higher leylandi fence and cannot be seen from the road, but Google Streetview just happened past when we had the gates open and now there is a clear shot of the rear of our home complete with our caravan. OH is very unhappy about that!

OH came home last night having travelled up from a meeting down south and before I had told him about your van he started chatting about the huge Hobby caravan he saw being pulled by a Porsche on the M25.  I immediately told him about yours being stolen and showed him the pic and it wasn't the same as yours but it does go to show how much they stand out when in transit - obviously yours was more likely pulled by a transit rather than a porsche but I will certainly keep my eyes open in case it heads up this way.  Personally I think if it could be recovered quickly I'd want it back nothing a good clean couldn't sort out in such a short period of time but whatever happens I hope you get it sorted soon xx
