I think i must be a weird one lol when it comes to the rain, not only do i like the sound of it on the cravan roof but i like to open the window and take in the earthy aroma, especially after a thunder storm when its at its strongest. I also have the ability to Smell when its going to snow, just by sniffing the air or the clothes of someone who had been out walking and has just returned indoors.
Best 'Rainists' experiance for me was being out in a warm tropical storm on the island of Granada, it makes the British storms look like a one min shower in comparison, out there it only takes five mins of storm conditions to drop enough water to cover the roads to a 3inch depth, the only difference is its not cold like it is back home, its more like the water temps that you bathe in everyday!

I was in Africa during a tropical rain storm which lasted for nearly a day a few years ago, your right, they're something else. We sat on the verandah of the dorma we were in for three hours watching it in amazement. Superb.
I think if I'd of been there in a van, I'd have probably suffered hearing damage Lol.

I use Earplugs, of the foam variety. The wax ones I find too uncomfortable. They dull the sound, not eradicate it completely. So I can't hear the rain on the caravan roof (unless it is a torrential downpour) but I can hear Mobile phones ringing, Alarm clocks, smoke alarms etc.
I also use them when staying in Hotels, it cuts down on noisy neighbours/corridors/firedoors/lifts/children/discos and a whole host of other barriers to restful sleep! ![](https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/forum_images/smiley1.gif)

Evening all....
Sat in my van on a lovely rainy evening. Has anyone come up with a solution to cut out the rain 'drum' noise on the roof! I've seen this:
http://silentroof.info/how-does-it-work
It's like a faux grass matt. Would it work?
Cheers, sleepless at Calshot!

I'm ok with 'normal' rain on the roof, but I had a really bad few nights under trees at a forest camping place in Wales. The caravans were supposed to be in clearings, but the forest canopy had closed in overhead. Apart from being in perpetual half light during the day, the dripping sound from the rain falling from the canopy high above was the worst I've ever heard in my life, it was impossible to sleep, and impossible even to communicate without shouting. In the middle of the night, in the pouring rain, I was desperate enough to go outside and put a tarp over the caravan roof and that damped the sound down quite a bit. Since then, I've never parked anywhere near trees if I can help it. We packed up and went home a day early, the only time I have ever done that.
What about having one of those roof covers on your caravan - that might work, but I don't know if it is practical for access reasons when out and about.
I got asked by a lot of people if we had a leak problem, which we hadn't...but that tarp stayed on until we went home!

i have never noticed much rain or tree dripping noise with my older van.. i would guess its because it has a fibre glass roof and some sound deadening material has been added..
i can hear the rain but dont get troublesome noise even if parked under a tree.. roof design must play a part in all this..

I`ve always found that a few bottles of McEwans `Champion` or cans of Special Brew dulls the sound of rain on the `van roof, and lets me sleep like a baby.

It can indeed be deafening on the roof of an aluminium skinned van. I wonder if the solution would be to have a vinyl roof covering, would probably help. I seem to remember back in the 60s all the boy racers were fitting these to their Capris. They were readily available from car accessory shops in kit form together with the adhesive. You never know it could start a trend and in a year or two could be the norm to see a lot of vans with contrasting colour roofs.
Might be a gap in the market there for an enterprising
entrepeneur..............Mick

My caravan roof is metal and I quite like the sound of the rain landing on it!
Not sure how you can dampen down the noise apart from avoid pitches under trees, invest in some earplugs so you can get some sleep at night or maybe somehow attaching large pieces of thick fabric/towels to the roof?!

if you think rain is bad enough wait till you have hail stones, that is like being a pea in a tin can then!
