We clean our Aqua Roll regularly but we do not drink from it. I fill  a container that has a small tap on it and it stands in the awning, handy for the kettle and the dogs bowl.

We clean every time before a major trip, and during the summer months when we have regular trips, probably once a month.

Even with the residue of clean water in your pipes, in the summer months you will quickly get mould etc.

We do however drink from our system, so there is the world of difference between this and just using it to wash.

I do the same,, i wont chance drinking the water from caravan taps no matter what the system has beeen flushed with ,,cryptospiridium is dangerous and lives in stagnant water, pipes and plumbing , not to mention ecoli cholera etc etc .

Jerry & Tina I think i am missing the point here. you say you wont drink from the aquaroll yet you drink from a container with a tap on. Yuo probably fill it as many times as the aquaroll so therefore there is no difference. It will still eventually develop a biofilm which in turn will probably encourage some nasty microrganisms to infest it - just like it would in you aqauroll and water pipes. If you look back and see my original reply you will see that I spent weeks trying to find out how to eradicate and keep at bay - I gaurantee Puriclean will do this go to their website.

I finally found the email - please take the time to read this below everything will be clear

Slime in the Water System

Dear Chalkie56,

In reply to your email, the problem you have with your caravan water system, occurs in all forms of stored water systems, sometimes incurring health problems.

You have not named the propriety strilising solutions you have used, however, Milton is a form of Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach) which is corrosive and should not be used in a water system and of course it does not clean.

All water will contain some forms of microorganisms, even in small quantities which the human body can easily overcome, but when stored will multiply to unhealthy levels unless preventative measures are taken.

Biofilms

Microorganisms within a water system will attach to inner surfaces, cracks and crevices and secrete a slimy glue like matrix biofilm. Bacteria within a biofilm will utilise available nutrients to multiply, enlarging the biofilm which releases bacteria into water passing through, creating further biofilms and infecting the water.

The water holding tank and complete water system should be cleaned and disinfected periodically and water should be purified as it is stored to help prevent the problem.

Biofilms are notoriously difficult to remove and requires a specially formulated product to remove the biofilm and eradicate the bacteria within.

Puriclean is a dual purpose formula which both cleans and disinfects in one action. The powder is best dissolved in warm water in a small container, transferred into the storage tank, topped up with water and mixed. Pump the mixture through to all the outlets and turn them off so that the complete system is in contact. Leave for 12 hours, run to drain and then rinse with clean fresh water. Don't forget to clean and disinfect any hose you use. Repeat if necessary, but it is most unlikely. When filling with fresh water, drop in an Aqua Clean Tab to keep the water pure.

Puriclean contains:-

•     Powerful cleaning agents
•     Alkalis to dissolve soil
•     Sequestering agents to hold soil in suspension to prevent redeposition
•     Anti-corrossion agents to protect components
•     Superior solid organic sterililant
•     Wide spectrum of activity
•     Fast rate of micoorganism kill
•     High alkaline formula which renders the sterilant non-aggressive and the cleaning action more powerful
•     Combined action which removes biofilm

Puriclean and Aqua Clean Tabs are available from most caravan accessory shops, but contact us if you have problems in obtaining the products.

We have forwarded our booklet on 'Care of Water Systems'.

Best regards,

Colin Vinyard

Wow! all this from what I thought was such a simple question!!

The next question then is if it is safe to drink the water straight from the taps?

Why pay for it when it is OK straight from the mains tap? Don't touch the water from the van for drinking.

In the small time we have had the van we normally use the tap and had no problems. But now its been sitting over the winter, it makes you wonder about the pipes. I guess as long as it has been sterilised it will be fine.

Looks like Water Companies have got it wrong after all these years of producing clean and safe drinking water.
For the last 30 years I've worked as a Process Engineer for a water company and much of my work was to install disinfection equipment for drinking water supplies. The main chemical to use is either Sodium Hypochlorite for smaller plants or chlorine gas for larger plants. They both dissolve in water forming hypochlorous acid which is the disinfecting element which also removes biofilms or stops them forming.

I think I've cleaned my aquaroll maybe twice in the last 5 years and never in the 25 years before. We don't drink cold water from the caravan taps but do have boiled water for tea etc which of course is perfectly healthy. Do clean my teeth under the cold tap though.
No problems in 30 years of caravanning.

We always use the water from the caravan taps just as we would the water from our kitchen taps at home.

Been caravanning on and off since 1971 with no ill effects.

Well I have tried to give you my experiences from last year and the exhaustive methods to try and solve my biofilm problem. After all this is what this site is all about passing on information to help others. It really is up to you wether you take the advice or not. But in a couple of weeks when I clean out my water system using the Puriclean method for about £8 which will last a couple of years. I will be safe to use and drink water from the onboard water system without any ill effects.
