Thanks for all your replies guys.

We can't justify buying a motor mover, we don't really need one, OH is a very competent driver, has no problems reversing and in all our years of caravanning we have never found ourselves in the postion where we would need one.

The reason for my question was because we can't reverse the caravan all the way up the drive (height restriction when car is hitched to caravan) and so have to unhitch it and leave it on the drive until somebody (boyfriends/mates) calls round and helps us to push it up the drive and up the side of the house.  The drive is quite narrow and has a slight iincline which then levels out under the carport.  Would a better option be a bigfoot mover or something similar?  Has anybody got any experience of these?

Thanks again

Same problem here. Small access road and large bank opposite, so I can't get the angle required with the car to reverse in.. I did do it once, but it was a 40 point manoever! So I bought a Mr Shifta and pull the caravan in onto the drive, then whizz it around until it's in the right place to get out again. This does involve a degree of backwarding and forwarding but I get there in the end. I didn't want a motormover on my caravan as it would make it too heavy and increase the payload. I bought mine off Ebay second user for £160. I'm disabled and usually on my own, so I can't push and pull even my very lightweight van around. But I can with this. Obviously I don't take it with me when camping, it's just for getting the van onto my very awkward drive.

Here's an example:
mr shifta

Although that one is expensive! New ones are approx the same price as proper motormovers!

ETA: I have a slope onto the drive from off the road, that's why I pull it in with the Shifta, rather than push. Also you need a hard sruface for these to work, unless you do what I do (on my soft surface drive) and put old mats and carpets underneath it! Even with all that, it still only takes me approx 10 mins to site it.

Many people on here know my views on motor movers, so I won't bore you with all that again.

I'll just say if I can't get the caravan where I want it using the car, it won't be going there.  If site pitches are so tight, I don't want to be on that site.

I don't see the problem in the pictures, unless there's a tight turn at the bottom of the drive.  It just looks like a straight reverse.

I am also concerned about what would happen if the caravan was moving on a public road and hit something.  I suspect you would not be insured.  Your car insurance certainly wouldn't cover it.

I wouldn't have a mover, because I won't pay a lot of money for the doubtful privilege of dragging a lot of weight around.  Payload is precious to me.  I can hardly walk these days, but we never mve the caravan a single inch by hand, so it makes no difference at all.

If it won't go in your drive, put it in storage.

Jim
