That's it (as far as I know), all the Sky channels that you subscibe to, you need to take your Sky box and viewing card from home.

what extra do you get from a dish that you dont get with freeview please. Apart from sky channel and sport.

Serious question please not being funny

Hi you are right you only get Freeview and all of your Sky Channels. Movies, sports, HD channels, Sky any time, kids ,

But the reason i went down this route it was because it was so easy to set up and straight forward.

And most sites where we have been you can’t get a digital signal, but with a dish you always will get a signal come through.

I do have a Freeview box and have used it once and I can say it is much cooler having such wide selection of channels and ease of use.
And yes I know I am camping, but when you have kids, it entertains them at breakfast time and night time and when it bad weather.

Us also, 3 weeks in Spain and then 2 more in France. No telly and it was heaven. We could hear our Belgian and Dutch neighbours watching the news on satellite. Bombs here, killings there, nothing but death and destruction. The very things I don't want to know about when I relax!

I bought a 'satellite-in-a-box' from Maplins, but converted the dish to fit onto a tripod.  All worked OK.  Bought a 65cm dish for France, and had a lot of trouble.  On one site, another Brit had virtually same set up as me (receiver was a COMAG like mine), and he was using the 38cm dish.  He brought his dish over to our van, plugged in his own receiver, and everything worked OK.  Switched to my 65cm dish and still OK.  Reconnected my receiver, and nothing.  Went through same procedure at his van, and same result.  We were using BBC London for this, on Astra 1.  So we agreed my receiver faulty.

We could get a few foreign channels, but cannot explain why.  Funny thing was, yet another Brit, again with same make Comag receiver, had exactly the same trouble as I did.   Because of this, I haven't thrown out tmy Comag receiver until I have done more trials at home.

Bertie.

Got an old sky box off our local freecycle scheme and our next door kindly donated their old dish,   first couple of times it took ages to set up but now its literally minutes.  Before setting up your van check out which way other caravanners have their dishes, this should help xx   Ps also seen a few boxes and dishes at carboots for a few pounds.

I reckon the tripod-mounted dish is the best bet.  Often see those with roof-mounted dishes on caravans and motorhomes struggling to get in a position to miss the trees.  Must be frustrating after shelling out mega-bucks for these units.

When I first got a sat dish and instructions from an 'expert' I spent about 4 hours trying to get it working and gave up, next trip out I re read the instructions and found that I had to select astra 28 on the tuner box first, (i think that is the one) prior to that I had been on the wrong satalite , and no matter how much i tried it was never goint to work, with practice I can usually get it working in about 5 minutes now, Mind you I have lots of form for doing things the hard way, you should have seen me with an awning!

I bought an easy find satellite with an lnb with an led light, you select on the box what satelite to find then press a button to switch the led on.

then start pointing it in the direction, it starts of red, when it turns to amber your close and when it's green your locked on.

To fine tune it use signal percent on the tele.

Agree with no tv - bliss posts. What I love about being on campsite is catching up on reading books, also try to keep away from iphone and sitting in front of tv. Take a few dvds away bit thats it. Got a month in France soon with no Tv and buy newspaper every couple of days and devour it!

We have just spent 7 weeks in France.  We take books and DVD's with us, but also take satellite TV.  Having the TV doesn't mean you have to be all the while watching it.  I also took my laptop, so that I could occasionally contact family on Skype, and for checking for any emails that might be important.

Over 7 weeks, you have to anticipate some rainy days; we had 12 thunderstorms.  So having alternative options makes sense.

Bertie.
