We have never asked to stay late as we usually just get up and go but I can understand why the wardens may say yes to some folk and not to others even if they are not full. Depends if they have agreed for a few others to stay on prior to your request. If they said yes to everybody then the poor folk arriving would have next to no choice of pitches.  Imagine setting up on a bad pitch only to find that a couple of hours later everyone suddenly disappears!!

A problem for wardens on some of the very popular sites is that on Saturday night they are full and whilst they are not full on Sunday night they do usually have a significant number of people coming during the afternoon. If they relax the 12 oclock rule then they are likely to have no pitches available for the people arriving, or perhaps an insufficient number of pitches. That being the case they can only apply the rule and ask people to leave. Some people merely want to have time to eat lunch and then leave and generally if they ask these people will be allowed to stay but are usually told you must be out by 1.00. The problem is that this gives the impression of having one rule for one member and another for the rest when in fact it just common sense being applied.

If you want the full day then the only way to be certain is to book it and pay for it, if you would be happy with the morning and be prepared to leave very early afternoon then ask when you arrive you might be pleasantly surprised. Wardens are generally very pragmatic people and if they can make someones stay better without inconveniencing others then they will do so. If they get grumbled at for being pragmatic I can understand them applying the rule rigorously, any sensible person would.

Has anyone questioned whether the wardens themselves are allowed to waive club rules; except, of course, in the event of a genuine problem?

The campsite I use regularly say they like to rest pitches when they can so the grass has time to recover,3 two week holidays on one pitch can be very hard on the grass area As it has been stated, CC sites let you choose any pitch available when you arrive, but CCC sites don't, you go where the warden wants you to go but they may give you the choice of a number of pitches.
