Congrats on getting a puppy.

We have 2 Cavalier King Charles who come caravanning with us and we are new to caravanning having just completed our first season.  Cavs are brilliant dogs but be prepared to stop and chat every few feet when taking yours for a walk as lots of people love cavs from kids upwards.

I've read everyone's comments and I would agree with everyone else's suggestions.  The only thing I would add to this is if possible get your pup microchipped asap.

We use cheap wet wipes to clean their paws after a walk, especially after their night time walk.  We also have waterproof dog coats for our dogs as they both firmly planted their bottoms down on the floor and refused to leave the caravan if it was raining.  Strangely now they have their coats as soon as we get them out when it's raining their tails start wagging again and they are in a rush to go out exploring.  We also cover the sofa's as they invariably sneak up onto the sofa's and onto our bed at night.  We also use the delta and dog tether, the delta holds both dogs tethers easily.

Have a great time.

Thank you all so much. I've tried to respond to everyone briefly below.

Phil: The problem with tea in bed is that someone has to get up to make it -and then get back in again. Once I'm up - that's it!

Rose+max & andcow: We've arrived at this from the opposite angle. It's because we are caravanners and rarely stop in hotels. As I'm now retired (well that's debateable) we now have the opportunity of a dog - an oppertunity we really have never had before.

Anniemacxx: Thanks for that. I especially like the idea of a folding dog bowl. Are they easily obtainable? Never seen one.

Tigermouse: I'll certainly look into the delta securing pegs. Are they made by the same company as Delta pegs - I assume so, but haven't looked.

Esther1: Now, Esther - I don't want to put any other ideas into Carol or Anna's head at the moment. I think we'll just stick with one small dog for the moment.

Zafiral, mike+judy & generalhawk: Were lookinging into the idea of one of those 'linen type' carrier crates at the moment. It folds down flat and might even double as a kennel type home for the dog to sleep in at night at home. it looks fairly flexible, but will she chew it to bits?

Phil: Lovely picture. Is he/she yours?

idmainian: No problem about the pecking order - I'm at the bottom anyway.

Jeff: Something small, Jeff - something small!! Always open to suggestions for names!

itinker: Another vote for the linen collapsable crate then!

Alpiner: Thanks for the links - will have a good look later. Great picture. Shopping might not be such a problem for us - generally I'm not a fan and end up by waiting in the car while Carol and Anna go and spoend the money - they're good at that. I always get moaned at when I go with them shopping - I want to buy 'all the wrong things'!!!

Rob12: Two greyhounds must keep you fit, Rob! Hope ours will be as well behaved.

pixie71: Thanks Pixie - and welcome to UKCS - I notice it is your first post. The microchipping is in hand. Pup comes having had the first of the adult injections (the next injection is due on or after next Wednesday.) It comes with Micro-chip & registration on the Pet-Log database. Kennel Club registration. A copy of her 5 generation pedigree. Her health card & worming record. A diet/care plan. A puppy pack containing a sample of food she is used to. A contract of sale which will safeguard both the seller and us as the purchasers as well as the welfare of the pup. Just need to sort pet insurance, I think.

Thanks for all your encouragement.

Yes David they are, and you don't need any special tent pegs to secure them, normal ones will do.

One of the most useful things we taught our puppy when we first got her was to drink out of a normal bottle of water. One of those with a drinking cap on. Now when we go anywhere we just take a small bottle of water and she is happy.

Ahh, King Charles they're lovely. I have a Jack Russell.

I'm sure you'll have lots of highs and lows with him, it's like having a baby, but it's worth it.

We have the best of both worlds, Cavalier and Jack Russell. The cavalier is a right thicko lol tends to run in the breed. The Jack Russell on the other hand is too clever by half. They both love camping with us and we take them everywhere. For sleeping arrangements we have 2 collapsible kennels that fold down lovely and keep the dogs quiet and relaxed when they go to bed..... an no tipping cups of tea when you get out of bed.

We would never be without the dogs when we go away now, unless we go abroad, so enjoy yours as daft as the cavaliers are, they are loving dogs and very active and normally bring the forest home tangled in their coats :O

we have two border collies and we crate them in both the car when travelling then in the awning when in the caravan, except when it's really cold then they stay in the van. When we come back after a walk we always give them an hour chilling in the crate to let them dry off. We also have collapsable crate they are fab.We have stored the carpets from the van and put runners in that are washable and easily replaceable. Agree having all the usual things like bowels, leads etc permenantly in van is easier. A cable and a peg are useful so when its warm the dog can enjoy the outside whilst ensuring still tethered - most sites insist on them being tied up. Check that sites have an ok dog walk especially for early morning and nightime toilet break. Enjoy we love it

Hi David,

I mentioned carrying water when out on long hikes. These are very useful. Lightweight and have a built in bowl for the dog to drink from.

Thanks for oall the posts.  I'll have a read of the new posts a bit later on.

Well we went to pick up the new dog today.  We're calling her 'Lizzie', and this is a photo taken at the kennels before we picked her up.

We have one of these bars:
http://www.ventlock.com/

it means we can park in multistoreys/places out of direct sunlight and have the dogs secure in crates with this on the boot. they get fresh airflow and we get a locked car.
